UBM
Out of interest ( ) what are the things to be looking our for on used S4 (B6/B5) : Seen some nice examples but all about 60k miles plus. What is the fuel econ like realistically. How expensive are the services, etc...
loddrik
Fuel economy would be pretty dreadful I'd imagine, but then I'm not even getting 25mpg...... from a diesel!!!

loddrik
But I suppose I have got close to S4 performance though, and judged by those standards the mpg ain't so bad.
UBM
Thats exactly my point. With the added insurance costs, the extra heavy V8 lump under the bonnet, more expensive running costs... I guess it would be nice, but the change in a nice exhaust note from a V8 isn't enough motivation to change - especially as the soot-chucker is loosening up nicely! Soapsuds
[ QUOTE ] UBM get your car re-mapped and you'll be content with it for a lot longer [/ QUOTE ] i doubt it - from what i remember, UBM is already regretting going non-quattro becuase of the wheelspin! When i chipped my A4, it was a tyre shredder!!! Now back to normal and damned spritley in this cold weather!!
UBM
Indeed! It is nippy enough as is. I know play a game daily when leaving work - floor it and time how long the ESP takes to go off!
Alastair_A3
The S4 would offer awesome peformance not just a nice sound! MPG would be around 20 combined i would imagine. Servicing hmm, expensive, for example twice the amount of sparkplugs to change and much more oil for the 4.2 engine.

the911sc
As discussed in many threads!.... I get about 25 mpg on the motorway. You cant compare performance of the S4 and a diesel I am afraid!; its another league...

Scotty
As an S4 owner (and a stage 3 one at that) I really doubt you were all over him. The current 535d (i.e. twin turbo jobby) is rapid. Once you've done a 1/4 mile run at Santa Pod, post up your time and then I'll tell you what his stock car did

[/ QUOTE ] Whilst I know the 535d is indeed very, very quick (the 530d isn't at all bad either) - and getaway power is good with all the torque - but I struggle to believe it'll outrun even a stock S4. I had some comedian in a Z4 3.0 find out about torque the hard way going home the other night - I think he though my S4 was an A4!!!!
gizze
I wasn't all over him at all, by 60 he was ahead of me but by the time I was at 100mph he was behind me, just, his is a tip though, I would expect the manual to be different. BHP is 344 and torque is 506lb ft, so just over 600nm. 0-60 is 5.5 seconds and 0-100 is around 13 seconds. The big difference is a DMS tuned car is 3 seconds quicker from 60-100mph than a stock car, down from 10.19 to 7.18seconds. I agree a stock car stands no chance. http://www.letstorquebhp.com/rwd.asp
loddrik
S4 would undoubtable be quicker accelrating from standing start, but my 330d has a tuning box and I'll bet that once up and running there is bugger all in it.

UBM
It's all relative. My car is much faster than a Micra for instance, but I always wonder, where do these extra seconds get you exactly...in hospital perhaps? Court?

And to be honest I do rate BMW 6 cyl diesels very highly, if I wanted a diesel that's what I'd drive. So I'm shutting up now!
