davyk31
The car I am buying does not have an armrest fitted and I asked the salesman about fitting one now. He said it was not possible as it was connected to the seat. Is this true or can an armrest be purchased. Any ideas on cost? The other thing is that my car has 17" wheels and had I been ordering from a new order rather than buying a stock car I would have ordered 18" as the extra cost is quite small. what are my best options now to change the wheels, again I thought of asking the dealer but do not see that they would upgrade me for a reasonable cost. RedRobin
Welcome to TSN, Dave....A bottomless pit of useful information and help. among other things . The armrest is quite independent of either of the two front seats. Just ask your dealer what happens to the armrest when either of the seats are moved back or forwards!! I don't know about cost but do a Search on "armrest" in this GTI forum and see what you find. Changing your wheels from standard 17s to standard 18s shouldn't be a big problem but it depends how close you are to your car's build-week date. Have you been given this date yet? allanon_1980
your salesman is talking S&^T. Its quite a simple job to fit the armrest and as robin said, if its connected to the seats how come it doesnt move when the seat is moved.
RedRobin
Dave, are you happy to name and shame this dealer? Answers like he gave you give other dealers a bad name. What was wrong with "I don't know, sir, I'll find out and call you in the next 24hrs."
silentandy
I think the only thing that might cause a problem would be the air vents for the rear passengers. I'm not sure if the ducting exists for those if you haven't specified the arm rest?

Simonl
I have the armrest and it's connected to the centre console only. Has he given you a build week, if not you should be able to update your order! It would probably be cheaper for you to cancel your order, add the 18"s and re order than putting them on later. davyk31
The car I am buying is at the dealers already and as I am getting a substantial discount with no wait that is why I am getting a car without armrest and 18s. It does however have leather which I probably would not have specified but with the discount I have been tempted by this one.
stevie_d
In that case the change upto 18"'s will be hefty, I think Leman or encee did this and can give you better costs.
Simonl
I didn't, mine were a factory fit... but i've heard it costs over 2K
RedRobin
....Something in the order of £2,000 IIRC for 17s >> 18s. LeMan has promised to buy me a set though.

silentandy
You can of course offset the cost of the 18's by selling the 17's on fleabay for at least £

Simonl
I don't think they care how much they're worth, they just want to bling up their cruddy mark 3's and mark IV 1.6's. Criminal when you see a lovely set of £££££ wheels on a piece of that you just know have been nicked from a descent car, as normally they are worth more than the car in question. Have to say, i'm paranoid about mine!
stevie_d
[ QUOTE ] I just hope no tealeaf catches onto what the 18s are worth. [/ QUOTE ] Speaking of this...A thread on UK-MKVIS the a while back highlighted a slight flaw with the locking wheel nuts. Some lad had all four alloys knicked off his MKIV GTI, because apparently there are less than 20 ( ) key patterns!!! As soon as I get my baby I'll be done Hellfrauds to get some proper locking wheel nuts.
Snoopy
Theres only 9 different keys of the locking wheel nuts iirc.
RedRobin
So, what is the most highly recommended locking wheel nut system currently available, anyone please?
ucjtckc
Try McGard Ultra locking nuts- the ones with a spinning shrowd. I got mine through a group buy on UK-MKIVs for about £25. They're highlighted rated on the Auto Express Group Test and sometimes you can pick them up quite cheaply on Ebay - just make sure you get the right ones! Rayza
Thanks for the info. I think I will have to invest in some of those. Can not believe how rubbish the VAG ones are then!!
