Alastair_A3
Just been brain storming really. Ive asked my son what he what car he wants for his 18th (june 2007 so a while yet) He loves the Black clio's, the dynamique model as it has the nicer alloys. Id have a budget of 3.5-4k. What are the pro's and cons? I know nothing about Renaults. Whats the basic spec of the dynamique model? Is the 1.2 give out 75 bhp like the fiesta 1.25? Thanks
loddrik
Wouldn't buy a renault, fiesta would be a better bet, or better still, something Jap or German
R32North
[ QUOTE ] Wouldn't buy a renault, fiesta would be a better bet, or better still, something Jap or German [/ QUOTE ] I had one and their actually not bad. The seats are good, the engines nippy and the styling is ok, I had a few sensor issue which were fixed under warranty but the auto lights and auto wipers are crap, and the seat-belt warning buzzer-boing thing is annoying as hell. Brakes are OK, too on-off for me, but worked well, po and wipers are 'opposite' is LHD !! Very good on fuel, they have plastic wings, but overall not a bad wee car. New Fiesta kicks its ass but you won't get on for that money with the same spec as a 1.2 Dynamique!
Avus_Bub
[ QUOTE ] Wouldn't buy a renault, fiesta would be a better bet, or better still, something Jap or German [/ QUOTE ] A bit like I wouldn't buy a BMW....... The Clio II is a great little car. My wife has a 1.4 16v Alize - 98Bhp It's a great engine. We've had it 5 years and the only problem was a coil pack going down (all 4 were done under warranty). I've driven the 1.2 16v and it's not in the same league in terms of performance, but still a great little fun car to drive. I appreciate that for a teenager the 1.2 is the only option though.I think for the money you get a lot of car and spec in the later Dynamique. Off topic but, I drove the new clio a couple of weeks back and if you've read the reviews then you'll know what the press think. I've got to agree, it's moved the game on and has got to be the supermini of the moment.I drove a 1.6vvt and it went very well. The quality of the interior and plastics really is fantastic and makes the Polo and Fiesta look very cheap inside IMO. It's looking like a Dynamique 1.6 5 door for her..... cruiser647
Get a small engined modern turbo diesel. You get power AND torque. The Clio 1.5 DCi gets 80 BHP, and a decent slug of torque, toys and 60 mpg on the motorway! (decent speed too)

Alastair_A3
hmm, the insurance for an 18yr old lad on a 1.5 would be alot, im expecting over £1000 with the 1.2. We currently pay £1900 for my daughter to have her fiesta in Liverpool. Lodrik of you had read my post you would know that i already have a fiesta i doubt he would want the same car as his sister! Thnaks for the replys so far
Avus_Bub
I think they did a lower spec 1.5 60 BHP.... Might be worth looking into. Also, I think you're right the 1.2 16v is 75 BHP. BUB

Alastair_A3
thankfully my son has been brought up with taste and doesnt like the whole "chavved up motor" scene. I think private education has helped
peterh
Had a 1.4 16v dynamique+ for a few years and it was very very good and no problems apart from the coil packs which were done under warranty. You might want to look for a model with the + on the end as I think it adds aircon to the spec. They got 4*’s in the NCAP tests which is very good for anything of that age / size should the worst happen as well. Good choice

Soapsuds
what about a nice Yaris T-Sport (the kitted version) with the 1.3 VVTi engine. By June 2007 they will be a good price and look great in black or the metallic sports blue. Fantastic drive! Good spec, bullet proof etc.!!! On another note, whetever happened to kids buying their OWN first car I had to purchase my Mini 1000cc for £350, get it roadworthy, tax and insure it myself and fuel it myself to get to / from school..... God - i sound old now.....

ChrisBuer
I personally wouldn't choose the Clio as friends have said that the reliability and build quality is fairly poor compared to competitors. Fiesta’s are very well built but their customer service leaves a lot to be desired (mind you, this is probably the case with most car firms). The Yaris would be a good car, or maybe something like a Corsa (newer shape one). They are pretty well put together, cheap to run and insure, plus they do look quite sporty (if image is on the criteria). Failing that, do what my dad did when I was 19….throw me the keys to a Caterham Jumping from a 1.25 litre Fiesta into a Caterham Superlight was…..interesting, but I learnt a hell of a lot and is probably why I’m a safer driver today. NeilB
It cost me about £900 for a Peugeot 106 1.5 diesel on 5,000 miles, with pass plus, on a driveway and in a low risk area for my foirst year of driving.
fjfr
Well, I can't imagine it will have cost him much more. He only had £1K to spend on a car, and £1K on insurance. First year driving, on driveway in low risk area. TBH, diesel doesn't reduce insurance costs at all - so 1.6 vs 1.5 I recon bout the same price..
