danksy
Drove the beast tonight, on what I think is fair to describe as a brisk drive back from a night out Glad to say that I managed to beat J_C's PB as well as getting the DIS to 13.9 mpg avg Somethings surprised me though... 1. How skittish the back of the car felt (we think it was down to different rubber on the back to the front) 2. Lag on the DBW throttle.... Initial throttle response is very sharp, but what I mean here is that after braking quite heavily, it can take about 0.3 of a second or so for the accelerator to respond, after moving from brake to gas.. Is this a quirk of the S4. Anyway... lovely car mate I am very very jealous The drive back to Brinkworth felt very pedestrian, and also I noticed how yellow my headlights are Thanks for letting me drive your pride and joy mate
J_C
[ QUOTE ] Glad to say that I managed to beat J_C's PB as well as getting the DIS to 13.9 mpg avg [/ QUOTE ] And IIRC that included the sedate outward journey, and the cool down afterwards! [ QUOTE ] Somethings surprised me though... 1. How skittish the back of the car felt (we think it was down to different rubber on the back to the front) [/ QUOTE ] Yes the Fulda Extremos on the back have been earmarked for replacement for a while, I just haven't got around to it. Hopefully I'll be fitting Eagle F1s sometime this weekend, to match those on the front. When the car was delivered it had 35psi all round and IIRC the skittishness was absent. The recommendation is for 39psi, so shortly afterwards I increased the pressure based on that. After the GSD3s are fitted I'll experiment again. I'd be interested to hear from other S4 owners on the subject of tyre pressures. [ QUOTE ] Thanks for letting me drive your pride and joy mate [/ QUOTE ] It was a pleasure! I felt a bit like a rally co-driver at times: "And the next corner is.....oh, we're round it already..."
Tizzy
John - Shouldn't be any skittish behaviour from the back end - unless you push hard enough for ESP activation. I would expect the tyres to be a big factor here - you should find a marked improvement with the Eagle F1's - I did over the OEM Conti's on mine. Re. tyre pressures, there have been a few opinions expressed by the S4 crowd, after some experimentation I run mine at 38/39 rear and about 41 front, which seemed to improve turn-in & steering feel. Not sure about the throttle lag - there is a TSB that re-maps the throttle on earlier S4's - this should be done by Audi if your car is still under warranty. Mine only hesitates if you are in too high a gear - like pretty well any car. Hope that helps!
lottiefox
Yes I have heard that JC's PB was shattered... I didn't feel anything skittish when I drove it but then I don't drive quite as enthusiastically as you Danks!!! Next trip, the turtle then? P_G
I think a few have mentioned the DBW lag in earlier versions and the software upgrade is available and worth it, I have no such problems in my late 2004 last off ther production line car Running 41 at front and 40 at the back of the F1's, the car also stands up in corners better whereas when I had less pressure in them the front always used to slouch and turn in wasn't as sharp. I still get drift on off camber corners but thats when I'm really pushing and the Recaro's are digging into my sides.

Scotty
I run 39 all round except for trackdays. I think what Danksy found is the reason in the manual it says put the best tyres on the back. In this way you get safe understeer and not skitish rear ends. My throttle improved a hell of a lot after the s/w upgrade. Still a fractional delay. John_Doe
Hi John, I tried a variety of combinations of tyre pressures and the best for me is F41/R40 in the F1's 245/19/35's.......enjoy the throb!!!
Ari
Haven't driven it but had a ride in it. Didn't seem that quick till we hit about 40mph and I noticed the speedo was actually reading 90mph! I think the expression is "effortlessly quick", much much faster than it feels as it is just so smooth and comfortable. The consumate high performance long distance express, it actually reminded me a little of the Bentley Continental GT I drove a while back, same feeling of pace far in excess of how it felt. Nice car. Ari
Oh, and as we approached some traffic lights at speed I did notice that the brakes don't seem to work on the passenger side... Need to get that fixed John!
J_C
Thanks everyone TSN I'm getting two Eagle F1s fitted to the rear this coming week. I'd planned to do so anyway, but just been too busy of late. I'll experiment further with pressures once they're on. It's under warranty until March next year so I'll look into the TSB issue for the throttle. I'm not sure if my car is affected (the build date is October '03). lottiefox
I've heard he is even going to lend it to Audi Driver International so that some under age chavs can take it for a spin and crash it into some random new Mark II TTs at Castle Combe later in the year. Such a generous owner....
