Sparky
Ok, I'm about to replace my phone, and have narrowed it down to the following two phones. Samsung D600, and the Sony Ericsson W810i. I've currently got a Samsung D500 and have loved it. I like slide-phones, the quality build and feel and the fact that hardly any other manufacturer can get anywhere near the screen quality. I never had any issues with the Samsung and would happily get another. So, out of those two phones, which would you go for? I've heard there are issues (still) with the joy pads on the Sony Ericsson models, but does anyone own either of these two phones and are there any problems with them? Cheers. CarMad
I just had the same dilema... However I went for a third option the Nokia 6280. I have to say its stunning. The screen is amazing, loads of features and the fit and finish of mine is brilliant. Its 3G as well so nice and quick for downloads, oh and if you join on T-mobile which is what I've done then you can add whats called web-n-walk with gives you up to 2gb of data usage a month for just over £5. I taken a few pictures and they look great. Its got a radio and anything else that you might need. Its a major improvement over my Dads K750 IMO. Pincher
I had a D500 and liked it for the very same reasons as you. When upgrade time came around, I went straight for the W800i and haven't regretted it for a minute. With regards to the joystick - I imagine you are only likely to keep the phone for a year? If so, don't worry as it is under warranty What's the difference between the 800 and the 810? And have you considered the 900?
robin09
I have the Samsung D600, I've always had Motorolas before this, but the D600 build quality is far superior to anything I have had previously. I really like the looks, and as you say, the slide function is very smooth. Camera is reasonably good, a bit grainy I thought but ok. Battery life is good too, even when using the applications alot. Apart from that, if you've had the 500 i'm sure you'll be pretty familiar with the set-up.
Sparky
Thanks lads. I'm going to avoid Nokia, because even though they've come along way, I still find the screens a bit washed out and I prefer the looks of the other makes. Pincher, I was told the difference between the W800i was that it's a Walkman phone (can be used as a Walkman with the phone shutdown), where as the W810 is not, although it does play MP3's. I'm staying with Orange, and Orange only offer the W800i in cream/orange colours which isn't to my taste, so I have opted for the W810i (black). I could get a silver one on T-Mobile, but I'd rather stick with Orange. Other than that, I think the phones are fairly similar. I can't get the W900 on Orange yet and I need to choose by end of April.
CarMad
Fair enough.. I showed me phone to my Dad and he couldn't believe how good the screen was. It is far better than the SE K750 and W810 by serveral times, it really is that good. As for Orange, well I left them this week for the first time in 10 years. They offered me a terrible upgrade deal and less than half the minutes that T-Mobile are offering at the moment. I'm now getting 250 minutes, 100 txt for only £22. Orange weren't interesting in matching it or even trying to either. I'm only on a 12 month contract so not locked in for too long either. Orange for time offered, 100 X network minutes and 50 land line, no txt for £25, a joke in comparison. I really would have a look at a working 6280 before you decide, it is the best screen etc. I have seen on a phone yet.
Sparky
I will take a look at the 6280 mate. In fairness I'd not looked at that model. As for Orange, they've never let me down on a technical side, but as Carphone Warehouse and others said to me, they are the least competitive right now and do not appear interested. Problem is, Voda isn't worth the extra money, T-mobile doesn't have the best line quality and offers more dropped calls in this area and O2 put me off with all my mates moving away from them in the last 8 months due to hassle. Not sure I want to stay with Orange seeing the deals out there, but they have given me 120 anytime minutes and 100 texts for £22 per month. Decisions decisions! CarMad
That was the same thinking I had. In the end I spoke to a few friends on T-Mobile around Manchester and they said it was great, good customer service and no issues with coverage or dropping out. One of them said 3 dropped out for him all the time but T-Mobile have been great. I have done a test myself after having the phone driving all the way to work ( 30 min drive through leafy areas) and it was fine. Pick of new phone against my old 6230. Sparky
Cheers for that Wow, you can see quite an improvement over your older one.
CarMad
When I looked at it switched on for the first time in the T-Mobile shop I was like a small child.. When can I get it when can I get it. So I called Orange that evening, they said thats the best we can do deal wise, which was pathetic. They basically sent me a PAC code within 20 secs of getting through to the retentions department, wasn't impressed I have to say. Anyway I went and got the phone the next day, and will be off Orange next week. If you are willing to be signed up on T-mobile for 18 months for £22 you can have 500 minute on the flext contracts. But as I'm new went for only 12months instead. But still get double what Orange offered and now I get 25% reduction in line rental for life effectively. Paul
I am (still) waiting for my W810i. should have had it a week ago, execpt it got * lost * when it arrived at the courier's depo. * read stolen *
DHA
orange use dodgy couriers. My 750i got delivered when I was out to a neighbour. NO note through my door. I call orange to check if it had been delivered. I did not know anything about the neighbour taking it in at this time. They did have a name but the couriers had not bothered to let me know about it. Thankfully I have honest neighbours but........??
Paul
This is through Parcelline sent from Orange. ordered it 6th. Parcelline had it on 7th for nextday delivery it went through various stages, before being confirmed off the lorry into the depo. From there it went awol. listed as "security check" on the 10th, which means they cant find it. Orange have to get another one sent out to me, but they are out of stock again. So i am not having much luck!
ian_m
I was told my new phone would arrive today from Orange, but it didnt, called them and they said due to Bank Holiday it will probably be tomorrow, fair enough I suppose! Sparky, that is a low amount of minutes and texts for that price I have just renewed and have been given 300mins and 600texts for £25pm
Sparky
Is that with Orange though mate?
Paul
Im still waiting through Orange. I called yesterday and its still out of stock. (W810i)
CarMad
I think it depends on how much you spend with them. If its a fair bit i.e. £40+ on occasions they want to keep you. But my other half had double minutes for 6 months so I backed my tarrif down to a lower amount. In doing so they couldn't care less about keeping me... shame. Am really impressed with T-Mobile so far. Customer services and info is first rate. Also I get a better signal at home than with Orange. Haven't had any drop outs either, and signal was even good at Oulton Park at the weekend. The video the phone takes is brilliant. 640x480 its the best resolution on the market by far, beating even the as yet unreleased SEs. Am really impressed by the battery life as well, for a 3g phone its lasting much longer than I expected. Its similar to my old 6230 and I'm playing with it a lot. [/ QUOTE ] I had a D500 and the screen went totally over about the period of a week. I had to get another phone to replace it. Luckly my contract was up in a month or so so not too much of a problem My biggest issue with the Samsung is its lack of voice dialing over bluetooth. There's no reason for it and it makes bluetooth in the car pointless it's just daft. Overall though Samsung have come in loads in the last five years and with 1 in 4 employees working in R&D they will only get better. One final point, have you looked at the D800 that's being advertised at the moment?
Sparky
Yes, tried the D800 and didn't like it. It's much slimmer, but also wider too, and it just doesn't suit my hands and overall was a little disappointed with it. It had better firmware than the D600 though. I've just spoken to Orange. They told me in no uncertain terms they'd not match what Audi_Smitten was quoted (300 mins, 600 texts for £25), but have given me 200 mins and 250 texts per month for £23. Ordered the D600 after a few friends got theirs last week and they love them. Not a massive change over the D500 but then it was a great phone anyway. They've made enough of a change though to push it forward so mine will arrive tomorrow. I enquired about stock of the W810i and she said she could allocate me one right away and it would be despatched before 4pm.

Sparky
It must all be down to the call centre you end up in. No idea really. Will wait and see how long it takes them to send the D600.
CarMad
They musn't like me.. They just weren't interested at matching any offer of even getting close to it. As I say I think its due to which band you fit in in relation to how much you spend. And I obviously haven't been spending enough for them to care. Bye bye orange. [/ QUOTE ] Funny you should say that. I was with Orange until last month and had been a customer for nearly 10 years. I wanted to get a new contract and they were really funny- it's a long story but I walked. Up until that point I'd never had a problem with them and always recommended them to friends; not now though. Now with O2 and so far really impressed. Their coverage in my area is better than Orange, the monthly tarrif is cheaper and I get more texts. The other nice thing they do is include MMS messages in their packages- ok it's the equivilant of 4 SMSs but it is more flexible.
