Sparky
Oh crap I like the idea of using warning markers in the cats eyes to show you the conditions ahead, but putting a camera in them?! Not good!
NeilB
Malaysia use these type of camera's to catch out drivers who are uninsured and haven't paid road tax. But our goverment will probabay use it to screw the honest motorist.

shark_90
I can understand it for ANPR stuff and I'm in full support of that. But for speeding? Before you know it they'll be able to prosecute with a fixed device without warning, and you won't be able to do anything anywhere
RedRobin
Feckin' 'ell !! Yes I support their use for warning but not for "speeding". Can you imagine the increase in potential accidents directly because of authority decreeing that you shouldn't exceed say 40 or even 50 when joining a carriageway from a slip road!? Good driving instructors advise joining quickly and with no hesitation. Electronically 70 max speed controlled M'ways? Feck that! I'll take the cross country roads. Where's that 'smilie' with the one-finger-salute? As I understand it, the 70 limit was introduced after an AC Cobra was caught at over 180 testing down the M1 in the 1960s(?). I was a young lad keen on motor racing and I remember well that we were very impressed when we heard about the Cobra. Now that cars are very much safer (brakes and handling etc) isn't it about time that the Law caught up and revised itself!? This sort of thing will turn me into a Grumpy Old Man. sufu
oh christ.... how is this government able to test and install such equipment when so many people are against it? I fear democracy is dead....
RedRobin
We are a minority and don't reflect the ignorance of the majority. There's democracy and there's democracy. Paul
That page has been there since atleast October 9th 2004 checking the url to that page through the internetwayback macnine gives the following. http://web.archive.org/web/*/www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/cateye.htm so it doesnt look like the ideas taken off (yet)
RedRobin
The Cobra clocking over 180 down the M1 was a definite event which hit the national press and media at the time. I cannot be 100% certain that this event specifically resulted in the 70 limit but the limit was introduced not long afterwards IIRC and many have attributed it to the Cobra. Doubtless any exciting excursions in an E-type would also have added fuel to authority's fire. Slightly off topic, but here's a nice pic of very nice Shelby Cobra (many of you will have seen this before but I don't apologise cos it's an ace pic!) jimdiesel
It was indeed a Cobra being given a shakedown test for LeMans that caused the furore. The car was being driven by Jack Sears at the time, if my memory is holding out.
Lee_
Surely the lenses in cat-eye cameras would soon get trashed by cars going over them and all the grit/sand that would get spread over them.

R32Ash
Unless the system was set up to take actual images of the vehicle, I doubt it could be used as evidence in a prosecution. An AI system to 'guess' the VRM wouldn't be anything like accurate enough to be taken as evidence. I suppose it depends if the government (or whoever) wanted to go to enough trouble to actually measure speeds accurately, and then produce an image for submission in a prosecution? Hopefully, if anything, they'd stick to using them for those illuminated 'naughty boy' signs which tell you to slow down.

NeilB
I was listening to the radio last night on the way back from work, and apparently these cameras do have a 40% failure rate in reading the number plates correctly.

skifly
funnily enough i have also heard from a rather accurate source that the congestion charge cameras are marginally over 60% recognition rate - although they do have a couple per gantry normally. Think we need to help out the government with "maintaining" the white lines on the roads... oops - think i missed and got a couple of studs
