oxfordlad
Spotted this on Autotrader: Autotrader linkage MK5 GTI with R32 trim, must have been some sort of project. Not really my cuppa, but your thoughts? Discuss! 17,250 would be cheap for it withought the trim!
GTiMK5
Personally I think its a crap idea. Why would someone want to take away the GTI identity and make it look like an R32. On the mark 4 it would be more understandable but the styling of the mk 5 GTI does not need changing. I like the styling of the R32 but only on the .:R. One thing that car will lack though is the soundtrack so as soon as it moves people are going to know it isnt real. The price is cheap as you say which would also make me question what the wheels are on there, I would imagine they are replicas for that price. oxfordlad
I have to say I agree with you. But how many of these type of things are we going to see on the road if they are around already? The bumpers but be very easy to swap over. The guy must have been only a few K away from the price of a standard R32 once he/she had paid for the car and the mods anyway, a bit pointless. Oli
Kind of defeats the point of getting a GTI. Wonder what he's done with the exhuast and rear bumper??
Stabb
Shame, some poor guy wanting people to believe he actually bought a R32 - some people should just leave well enough alone!
nhs
Bizarre - who would want to do this when the extras must have cost quite a bit.... And he'll drop money on the resale - not many people in the market for a second hand GTI that has been pimped to look like an R32 UNPIMP that car ps the links will download
GaryGTI
Delusions of Grandeur! What a waste of a good GTI. I could sort of understand it if it was a basic golf, but why pimp an excellent GTI, so that people think it is a R32? I wonder if when he shops at Asda, he takes a Harrods carrier bag with him? Paddy_Driver
So...(not wanting to start a debate) I wonder how much the R32 18's are? Paddy
Oli
Tim from SCW sold his new R32 wheels with tyres for just over a grand!!
ashleywater
Pointless exercise............. Swapping the worst bit of an "R" for the best bit of a gti! The 18" Monzas are pretty s**** as well, so dont get the wheel thing either.......... Oh well, each to his own, I guess.............. RedRobin
Thoughts? - total crap! Both the GTI and R32 Mk5s are excellent cars in their own right. Why pretend one is the other?
oxfordlad
We got there in the end then! Perhaps someone should buy it just to put it back to stock!
Simonl
Probably cost him more than an R32 anyway... nob.
AGK512
[ QUOTE ] Swapping the worst bit of an "R" for the best bit of a gti! [/ QUOTE ] So what if you saw an R32 with a GTi front end and wheels ...
RedRobin
[ QUOTE ] Probably cost him more than an R32 anyway... nob. [/ QUOTE ] ....I've just realised that I've already spent £30K on my GTI - The cost of a new R32, but I would be spending similar on a R32 if I had one. No regrets and plenty to enjoy. At the end of the day, half of the guys on here have changed something about there car and I cant see how it's more understandable on the MkIV? There are plenty of new GTI owners out there who have changed something already whether it be an exhaust, air filter, chip or body kit...no car is perfect! RedRobin
Err....I don't see how GTiMK5 is saying that "the MkV GTI is perfect". In fact, he is currently changing from a Mk5 GTI to a Mk5 R32. I think the point is the pretence of appearing to be another specific car (whatever that car might be) and not just performance modding. I, for one, simply don't like imitation anything. geo_nr1
Robin, I do take your point about presenting something as something it is blatently not, but you are mis-understanding what I am saying. I am questioning why it would be acceptable to change a Mk IV than a Mk V....afterall look at the changes you have made.
RedRobin
Aren't we discussing 'identity' in this thread and not the other mods? I understood the topic to be about a Mk5 GTI being body modded to look the same as a Mk5 R32....Hence 'imitation'. I've possibly misunderstood something because the Mk4 has been mentioned somewhere. Regarding the changes I've made: The rear valance and Quads are the only visible mods and they don't imitate another car. I doubt that anyone can see that my suspension is lowered a max of 5mm. New alloys are OEM. The rest are internal. Ooops! I forgot the aerial! (modded for purely functional garage door reasons).
geo_nr1
Robin, as I said above, [ QUOTE ] I am questioning why it would be acceptable to change a Mk IV than a Mk V [/ QUOTE ] which was stated in one of the opening threads. I am not questioning changes or mods to cars, god knows the changes I have made on my cars over the years....but you live and learn that you will not usually see the return for the cash you put in

I am questioning why it would be acceptable to change a Mk IV than a Mk V ....afterall look at the changes you have made. [/ QUOTE ] Did I say the GTI was perfect? If I did maybe you could point out where. If I thought it was so perfect why am I getting rid of it? Where did I say it was acceptable to make the MK4 look like an .:R? I actually said it was more understandable, not that it is acceptable. The MK4 GTI looks the same as any other MK4 with the exception of the .:R and the anni, there is nothing to distinguish it other than the badge and wheels whereas the MK5 GTI has been giving its own unique styling to set it apart from the rest of the MK5 golf range as has the .:R. So what I am saying is that I can understand why MK4 owners may want to change the look of their cars and one of the ways they do this is with the .:R bodykit (look on ukmkivs). I am not saying making them look like an .:R is good because I dont think trying to make it look like something its not is good, just that I can understand why they would want to change the appearance. But with the MK5 I cant understand why someone would want to take the GTI identity away and make it into something its not. I am not saying the GTI looks perfect but rather than making it look like an .:R why not improve on what is already there, i.e. colour code the bumpers etc. FYI I have never had GTI blinkers on, I have never been 100% happy with the car and have been looking to change for a while. RedRobin
[ QUOTE ] ....but you live and learn that you will not usually see the return for the cash you put in [/ QUOTE ] .....That's right. However, I think that most of us mod our cars for our own benefit and enjoyment and accept the financial 'loss'.

ashleywater
[ QUOTE ] What about an R32 dressed as a GTi..... [/ QUOTE ] Uh..........probably not as "stealthy" as the real thing me thinks............. When I arrive in someones mirror, they look in there rear view and think...........VW (and probably whose that fat old geezer, driving that fine limousine!) With a gti people look in their mirror and think..GTI! Well I would anyway, and I could be classified as someone, who should know the difference i.e, The Minority! Oh! and with Red on the "clone" but fake thing, modding a motor is a personal thing, and each to their own, making your jam jar individual is fine, but I just dont see the point of this particular practice.....
