alexc
I heard the alarm today for the first time on my Audi A4 Avant. Sounded like my phone was beeping from under the sofa....... didn't know what it was at first?! Is this normal for an A4 alarm or is mine faulty? If it's normal, is there an upgrade I can get added to the existing system? Cheers in advance....
Sparky
It's normal. German law states they are to be quiet. Utterly pointless to be honest.
shark_90
Completely agree. My uncle's was broken into in the summer, it was outside on his drive no more than 20 feet from his bedroom window which was open. He didn't hear a thing. danksy
The TT was similar, a true comedy car alarm The only conceivable way around it, would be to take the siren to bits, and make take the "trigger" signal to the siren to work a relay to a much louder version
alexc
So how have you guys got around the problem? upgraded to an aftermarket system? Which one?
PetrolDave
My A4 TDi was broken into on my drive in January last year while we were about 10 feet away in the lounge - we thought the quiet beeping was my mobile phone upstairs! I've emailed most of the car alarm specialists in the Southampton area about adding on a proper alarm siren - and not one of them has even bothered to reply! The alarm horn has 3 connections - ground plus two that come from the control module
alexc
Ok, cheers for the info, I'll do some digging and post my findings, ideally I want to upgrade to something that's compatible with the existing system.

Sparky
It's also the sheer amount of sound proofing that helps to cut the sound. Set off the alarm with the bonnet open - there's quite a difference. To be honest, if I hear a car alarm these days, I never respond to it. I'd not know what mind sounds like and it's usually too late anyway.
Mollox
The horn beeps on the S3 - to be honest, if it goes off I'd rather not admit it was mine its that bad. I had an aftermarket alarm fitted to the Golf, which was great....until it went mental 2 years in and then suddenly no one can fix them. Most of yesterday afternoon there was a really loud and incessant car alarm going off nearby. I didn't get up to see what it was, I just sat there getting more and more annoyed and was on the verge of getting up and setting fire to whatever it was but in the end, after an hour or so it went off. They're pretty pointless these days sadly.
bells0
My old Zed was pretty quiet too - but it was supposed to be like that from the outside - different story on the inside, was deafening! Guess this is so as to keep the peace for a false alarm, but deafen anyone tryin to nick it! - are Audi's like this too? Haven't tried my cab alarm yet. PetrolDave
I had a 130dB siren on the alarm in an RV I used to own. That was mounted inside and it was SO loud it was painful - an incentive to anyone inside to get out ASAP and hence limit the amount they actually took. A well designed and fitted alarm will create very few false alarms - the worst culprits being ultrasonic interior detectors, which are an absolute No-No in a reliable alarm system, you have to use a microwave interior detector. I learnt that from bitter experience while working for a British sports car manufacturer.
Niexplorer
[ QUOTE ] make take the "trigger" signal to the siren to work a relay to a much louder version [/ QUOTE ] Sounds plausible, so to speak. You could use the relay to activate the horn.
