akira
Anyone know of a free, or nearly free utility that lets you boot of floppy and perform a secure format of a drive? Friend of mine has sold his pc and he used to have all his accounts etc on there so wants a proper job doing.
Biffa
I've used tools from the Free Secure File / Disk Deletion (Wipe) Utilities website before.
drpellypo
Yip, remove the hard drive and put another one in. That's pretty much the only 100% sure fire way of formatting a drive completely.

Biffa
We used to drill holes in the drive then had a sledgehammer out by the skip But for non-essential data you can get by with wiping it with some of the tools on that site. Depends whether the low possibility of someone wanting his accounting data is more of a priority than the cost of a new (or second hand) HDD.
