Snail
Considering making my internal DVD Writer External, so i can lend it to my parents for recording their holiday videos and stuff, just not sure how good USB2/FIrewire are for transfering consistantly large amounts of data at a decent speed. Anyone any experience? is it a bad idea?
s4dreamer
Either should be more than fast enough to cope with reads/writes from/to an external DVD-RW drive (although I've not tried it). Just make sure your folks have USB2.0 ports (if you're going the USB route).
shao_khan
Never had any issues with Firewire at all.

Snail
You can get em for about £30 off ebay, or i've seen USB2 & Firewire ones for about £50 from the usual places (novatech, scan, ebuyer, watford) I wanted to share my writer with my parents, but, they have a mac, and i cant find Mac drivers for any decent dvd-writers
s4dreamer
There must be drivers somewhere snail - try asking in a Mac forum.
Snail
I've tried the manufacturer websites, but they could be hidden or custom written by/for apple. Any suggestions on mac forums for me to try?
s4dreamer
Try MacWorld - they seem to be pretty big
Mac
For consistant and more reliable performane go for a firewire enclosure. From what I have experienced its less prone to hang ups (ie data stream interuptions) and is just generally more reliable for consistent data transfer (needed for dvd writing). I have used quite a few different external units and I seem to have more issues with USB2 units than I do firewire.
