okeycokey
Well, my brakes are seriously spackered! Since I stuck those red stuff pads on I have completely obliterated the disks; warped to buggery and fading within a couple of hard stops. I am therefore gonna have to bite the bullet and get a brake upgrade. I was just gonna get the ECS discs but think I might as well replace the whole caboodle, calipers and all... therefore a big brake kit is required. I see on the EIP website that they recommend the Brembo GT kit but most companies (AMD et al) seem to go for the Porsche kit. Can anyone provide any idea on the difference and suggest which one to go for? Additionaly, is there a big benefit in upgrading the rear discs? cheers guys! Woppum
right well don't dp the AMD porsche kit. I have them and they are great but not worth £2.5k IMO. Id speak to Mook he swears by the cayenne upgrade (which isn the same as what AmD offer). If not Brembo sound interesting. What AmD offer are 993 disks and callipers, but only for the front... BigMeanBob
I'm still really struggling with what to do about brakes at the moment. Every since I was on the track last year the brakes really feel spongy...was chatting to Jim @ Star on Thurs about options... Option 1 : New pads and race fluid with standard discs (around about £150) Option 2 : Stop-tech OEM replacements (drilled) (around £350) Option 3 : ECS 2 piece OEM floating discs (around £600) Option 4 : ECS Stage V upgrade (£1500-2000) Really can't make up my mind at all b0b

Just tried a full anchor stop from 140mph - works rather well!

Mook
I run the ECS Stage 5 front and Stage 1 rear with Red Stuff pads all round. Ludicrous stopping power. Zero fade. Don't keep the Pagid OEM pads if you do go for this setup. Buy yourself Red Stuff pads for the front and rear. As above, get ready to part with about £2K, plus fitting. helfinger
i have a set of 'Tarox 12' pot calipers with 350 mm front discs and a set of 300 mm rears discs and they are amazing, only downside is you wont get much change out of £3.5K, can't express how good they are. i ran them just with the std rear discs for a short while but when i ungraded the rears they were transformend again...well worth doing the reas at the same time.........also with Tarox kit there is no need for wheel spacers so if your looking to change your wheels in the future then you will be able to choose lots of designs..... okeycokey
thankyou helfinger Do you have any ideas as to what % of the braking is done by the back?
helfinger
i don't to be honist , but when i fitted my rears it made the peddle travel less and any slight pressure on the peddle it was instant braking....they always say you need to upgrade the rears so you get a even balance of braking which after trying either way i do agree...... [/ QUOTE ] As per Helfinger's post, yes it is - I also run the Stage 1 rear brake upgrade as well. You can get away with 8mm spacers, but there is so little clearance over the Cayenne Turbo calipers on the front that I wouldn't want to chance it. You should fit the 10mm spacers front and rear to retain the same track front and rear - and don't forget the longer wheel bolts and longer locking bolts! Technically you can run larger brakes on the front only, but you will find that when you stand on the brakes, the imbalance is horrible - the back end of the car will want to lift off the ground, because there is less braking power on the rear of the car. You don't have to go to the ECS Stage 5 (or Tarox 12 pot) on the front if you're running a fairly stock car. I went for the Stage 5/Stage 1 so I can stop the bleedin thing! BigMeanBob
I think I may give these stoptech oem pads a go. For £300 I suspect I can't really go that wrong... Still a little scared to drop £2.5k on the big brake upgrade b0b
RedRobin
Surely you don't need to spend £2K+ on brakes unless you want to do track fun.
Mook
It depends how much your engine is modified, Robin. Stupid go faster power on the road also needs stupid stopping power on the road. You get there quicker, so you need to slow down quicker.
okeycokey
My R is standard (at the moment) except for the exhaust. The main reason for me wanting to put some uprated brake discs on and not just replace the stock is because I assume that a big disc kit will take the hard braking better? Mook I assume this is true and that I'm not just going to completely mince 2k's worth of new braking equipment like I have done the stock??!! Mook
I cooked and warped two sets of stock front disks when I ran the AmD Stage 2.5 (engine upgrade) on the car around Donington. The ECS Stage 5 front and Stage 1 rears (both equipped with Red Stuff pads) never fade, haven't warped (despite my trying very hard around Bedford Autodrome) and stop the blue thing like it's hit a wall. But without the bending metal and airbag experience...
