Skimmed....

Hello all,

I've got an R32 Golf with AMD stage 4 and was wondering if I could have the head skimmed? As far as I know the cams are 268/264. Whould this take the pistons too close to the head? And would it be worth having ports polished etc? I want to keep it N/A so i'm not wanting to go the forced induction route. What else can I do to get more power?

Thanks in advanced

I wouldn't bother skimming, go for getting the head ported & flowed, have the inlet manifold gasflowed or change it for a Schrick item. Fit a 6 branch exhaust manifold and free-flow system, port the throttle body. That little lot should give you a few more ponies! 169144-ok.gif

Thanks for your help guys, I'll have a word with Advanced Autosport and possibly a few other companies and see what they can come up with now I kinda know what i'm asking for. Would larger injectors help me here?

The only reason you would have the head skimmed would be if it had warped. All you do in skimming a cylinder head (by more than a couple of thousands of an inch) is to increase the compression ratio, which ultimately leads to increased heat.

The 264/268 cams you refer to are the after-market Schrick cams that AmD use as part of their Stage 4 upgrade. You can also buy these from companies like Big Boys Toys and use them with the REVO remap to get similar results.

First question I've got for you is how much power you want and what your budget is. Around £3.5K will get you up to around 300 bhp without having to remove the cylinder head.

For the money, not really. You need to install larger injectors and different plugs if you're going down the supercharger or turbo route, but you've already said you want to stick to naturally aspirated.

The Schrick VSR Inlet manifolds work wonders on these engines, cost about £1200-£1500 new but you can probably pick up a used one for around £8-900. Get the head ported/flowed too!

It's all about getting the air & fuel in and out quicker. ECLIPSe.gif

Hummmm, thanks for your help guys, got more results than I expected. I think I'm running around 302BHP (well she was when AMD did her) with my stage 4 but think it still feels slightly heavy. Could just be that I've got used to it but I've had her like this for some time now and haven't spent much money on her so I think she deserves a little kick. I'll have a look into the manifold and see what I come up with. Thanks

Is that from experience on the R32 Alex, or the VR6? The R32 comes with a variable inlet manifold, although the intake runners are not all exactly the same length.

Moreso the VR6, with the R32 you can still benefit by gasflowing the existing inlet. 169144-ok.gif

Havit - Feck, you want to hang onto your money - the supersprint downpipe comes in at around £900!

Alexc - I totally agree with gas flowing the inlet pipes, although the fact that they're made out of plastic makes it bloody hard work! I've just not heard that Schrick have released the variable inlet manifold for the R32.

I haven't been very successful in finding a Schrick Manifold for my R, but the Supersprint downpipe I have found (althought slightly move expensive than Mook's price) seems a crazy price but i'll enquire anyway. Any chance you could let me know where you got that quote from Mook?

www.jbrperformance.co.uk - talk to Richard. Just found the e-mail - RRP is £818.89 + VAT.

I would seriously doubt that it's justifiable to spend that kind of money for the very minimal bhp gain you'll get - doubt you'll get even 1 bhp gain.

AmD have taken the n/a R32 engine as far as they can with the ST4 upgrade - supercharger or turbo is probably the best route to go after that. The VF Stage 1 kit will take a stock R32 with just a Milltek cat-back exhaust up to 330bhp.

If you don't fancy forced induction, you're really much better off spending your hard earned on modifying the suspension by uprating the anti-roll bars or even going the whole hog and uprating the shocks and springs to something like the KW V3 kit, as well as sticking an uprated Haldex controller on the car.

It might not go any quicker in a straight line, but it'll sure as sh*t go quicker around the corners.

I haven't had mine skimmed but I have had mine ported and polished, to be hones't I haven't noticed anything. I have also been looking for a Schrick manifold but Schrick don't make one for the R32. the best I can come up with is this thing,

but who know what it is......

I agree with Mook, £900 for a downpipe is expensive.....

(Thanks to www.kompressorpower.ch for the pic)

I got a mate to do it for me, he is very experienced with Cosworths and bikes and promised me a performance upgrade if I had this done. (It was going to be free if it wasn't noticeable) It only cost me a night out!!!!

It did take him a week though...... ZZZ.gif
