Ian_C
Welcome to Tyresmoke! You have a six speed auto on a 2002 B6 A4? The tiptronic is agreed to reduce economy slightly like any make of car. Having your own clutch pedal will increase the fuel consumption. Edited to say: Personally I'd take a manual tractor everytime, but everyone is different! Ian
UBM
I wouldn't consider a TDI unless you do at least 12k a year minimum in order to make it pay.

Daz
[ QUOTE ] The tiptronic is agreed to reduce economy slightly like any make of car. [/ QUOTE ] Really Ian. I suggest you check out the economy details for a B6/B7 S4 then. Manual - urban 14.4 - extra urban 28.8 - combined 21.1 Tiptronic - urban 15.7 - extra urban 30.7 - combined 22.
Ian_C
The tip is more ecomical than the manual. Take it that is due to longer gear ratios for a more relaxed drive? Ian
Fergy
I agree Ian, I was told Tip more economic. Thank GOD I got one, averaging22MPG with 1.8T (190).

Now DSG - that's another matter............ The consumption difference is small though and certainly not worth changing your car over, and only worth considering shift to diesel if you are doing high mileages. Work out the changeover costs then relate that to annual mileage and fuel savings. Cheers
jimdiesel
Daz, are those not the figures for a multitronic box?
Phantom
I think they are the figures for the Tip as the multitronic is not available for the S4, well it wasn't when I last checked the brochure
CraigR
[ QUOTE ] Daz, are those not the figures for a multitronic box? [/ QUOTE ] No multitronic on the S4, manual and tip only as Daz has quoted
jimdiesel
Yup I should learn to read. The S4 tip has taller gearing than the manual, which more than compensates for the less efficient gearbox, hence the better combined figure.
CJS4
Daz is right. I had a manual B6 S4 and now have a B7 S4 Tiptronic. The Tiptronic is a good 3 to 4 mpg better.
richspeight
Are you sure the 02 1.8T had a Tiptronic 'box? I would have thought that any non-quattro car would come with the Multitronic. The difference being that the Tiptronic is a standard torque converter auto (and thus uses some engine power); while the Multi is a CVT (constantly variable transmission) which uses a (in the case of Audi) chain and moveable cogs to give a near infinte number of gear ratios between the top and bottom gears. The main advantage of this is that under (light) acceleration (and during general ambling about), the gearbox keeps the engine at it's most efficient. Thus saving on fuel. That is of course unless you leave it in 'sport' mode and enjoy hooning about in your car (you know who you are! )
