maddenmark
Caught speeding doing an average of 118mph over a 5-mile stretch. Topped out at 138 mph apparently Any views or thoughts as to what to expect. Did have clean license for the last 6 years.
JamesB
To be honest, I can't see any way in which you will hang on to your license. I think the question is the length of the ban and the size of the fine. Assuming it was a clear motorway in OK conditions, I'd hazard a guess at 28 days and £300 (unless this was in a thirty, of course).
shao_khan
Depends what the charge is - if Dangerous Driving with excessive speed (DD40 I think) - then you could be looking at 12 month ban, plus probation/community service/ big fine / prison time. malagus
over 5 miles! - Im sorry but I cant see in any situation how doing c120 average for 5 miles is safe and responsible - Id hope 6mths min. ban.
DHA
I would suspect a lengthy ban I'm afraid. Unless you hire the celeb lawyer.
NewNiceMrMe
Over that distance I think the future is very bleak indeed. As SK says, I think you could be looking at a minimum 12 month ban and personally I think there is a very good chance of a suspended sentence or community service. It's unlikely they'd give you a full custodial term for it, but I think the fine will be substantial. Let us know what happens.

malagus
Its only my opinion, but it doesn't seem there are mitigating cricumstances - hospital run, evading police etc, i cant honestly say I feel that doing 120mph over such a distance is a safe thing, and I believe that a minimum 12month ban should be imposed, and i hope the justice system is good enough to impose min of 6. im just offering my oppy - if we could have some more background maybe it would prove me wrong... NewNiceMrMe
I think it has to be remembered that with an average of 118 mph as a speed - that 5 miles is covered in two and a half minutes. The distance passes very very quickly indeed. I wish Mark the best of luck. I suspect most TSN-er's have done well in excess of the limit at some time or other and could have suffered a similar fate. malagus
no doubt it will - I would like to know what stretch of road it was over - a m-way I can swing for that, best of luck in getting a short ban - if not, then over 5 miles it seems a little dangerous. Ive no problem with the speed, its just the distance.
shao_khan
I think a lot of people have done upto 120 at some point - as said over 5 miles is an insignificant distance and passes quickly. Dont forget you have committed a crime worse than anything bar bank robbery in this country so expect the worst.
malagus
I must say though - ban? ok to a year. Fine? Ok up to £1000. CUSTODIAL SENTANCE?? - gotta be ahving a laugh. I think excessive speeding must be dealt with, but with prison??? as you say SK, its one of the worst crimes there is, so expect them to bring back hanging. R32Ash
Have to hope the beak is having a good day. I'd have thought you'd have to be looking at a ban of at least a few months in any case. Best of luck with getting off as lightly possible though.
JamesB
It's funny, though, people seem to get less than you might expect at times. Look at this list
shark_90
Malagus - you're a cock, you're full of sh1t, and most importantly, you can't drive. It'd be appreciated if you kept your "opinion" out of driving-related posts please, until you can actually formulate your own opinions based on some experience. Best of luck with it Mark, hope the powers that be are feeling kind.
malagus
feckin hell! no need to go off on one - if you think im wrong, then say so, but theres no need to be offensive. ETA: This is My opinion: get caught at 138MPH, a ban should be in order for the law to be a decent deterrant. I don't like to see anyone banned, and on reflection to be measured over that length of road it must be a big multi-lane road. best of luck to you on getting the shortest ban possible, but if the law is working, a ban must be imposed to stop eevryone doing it - thats just my opinion, and if you all disagree (which many of you do) feel free to say so - however shark, calling me a cock is not the adult way to say 'I think you are wrong', and if there is a personal problem you have, don't hesitate to PM me. Stoogie
just unluky bud, its been said on here, we all sit at speeds above the speed limit, whilst 118 is high, its not as bad as some people would have you believe. doing 55 - 60 in a 30 would be down right stupid, taking it that you were not in a 30 / 40 / 50 stretch, and were probably traveling on a motor way, i think the fine will be quite high but ban, which will happen, wont be to long. As for people slating you when its quite obvious they have no driving experience, get a xbox and shut up kids. good luck bud

NewNiceMrMe
The link that James posted leads to some very interesting information. On reading it, I'd modify my opinion and say the resultant ban might not be as bad as I thought. On saying that, there does appear to be a lot of variation. I guess conditions are highly conducive to the outcome. E.g. was it raining? What time of day or night was it? Were the roads busy? Were you aware you were being followed? Were you racing - blah blah blah. I agree with one of the other comments above too, and that is that speeding in 30 or 50 zones doesn't quite compare - indeed should be treated much more severely.
