Tyre tread - quick question

The TT has done 12000 miles now.....front tyres are about 1mm from the marker, rears seem to have a fair few mm on them still. Road noise seems to have increased from the front recently, running on the Contis that came with the car.

So, do I run the front right down to the legal limit and then bite the bullet and get four new ones, keeping the rears as a coffee table? or have two new front Contis, run them until the rears are to the limit then swap for all four new somethings?. confused.gif

You need all 4 tyres within a certain tollerance of each other (3mm?) on a Quattro car - so i'd change the whole lot for something better. The contis on our A4 got very noisy near the limit on wear.

Change ours first for Avons - horrid tyres. Then Dunlop Sport sp2 (i think thats the name) and they are great.

Thanks SK, I thought I'd read something about this - I've noticed over the past 500 miles or so that the handling is definitely not as planted on some twists - there is a big difference between the front and rears and that must be it.

Looks like four new boots for the turtle then......time to raid the piggy bank.....

Pilot Sports 2? or Eagle F1s.....

My TT is Haldex Quattro - OK, pretend in some ways but still needs the same tyres and tread patterns on all four boots! smashfreakB.gif

I can't have non matching tyres anyway. Forget the handling. Its not symmetrical. ROLLEY~14.GIF

With Mytyres they send the tyres to your door, and you then goto your local tyre fitter who will put them on for about £10-£15 a corner. Black Circles will either mail them to you like Mytyres, or direct to the fitter so you just have to turn up without the hassle of trying to fit 4 tyres in the TT.

I think as Paul_S3 may have posted, it doesn't matter about differences in tyre depth of tread as the Haldex system allows for this.

I know the horse has bolted but next time change the tyres half-way through their expected cycle. Oh, and get Goodyear Eagle F1s next time. 169144-ok.gif

Yep - very happy with the SP9000RS, fitted to both the RS and the A2, but they're not available in a wide range of sizes. I don't know whether the alternative SP9090 is any good. Not only do the 9000s wear well (24k on the RS and 27k on the A2), but the grip and handling seems to be spot on also.

Paul did, but i still keep tread even across all 4 tyres. Its good practice to have the same grip all round. I cycle my tyres so i end up replacing a full set at once. But should i have a non repairable punture for example, requireing one new tyre,then technically it wont harm the haldex.

I also keep same manufacturer/tread pattern across all 4 tyres

Matter of personal opinion I guess. I would always put the new pair of tyres on the back, but some people seem happy to have fresh tyres on the front and 2mm tyres on the rears. This seems madness to me - wearing down the fronts and then swapping them to the back. If you want to replace the tyres as a 'set', Pauls' method is the best by regularly cycling the tyres, and indeed the only method for a full-time four-wheel-drive like an Audi S4, Scooby or Volvo T5.

Strange you didn't get on with the F1s Paul, for you are only the second person I can recall putting a bad word against them. Indicentally the first was Jonny Roberts who I believe lost a tread when tracking his stonking B5 RS4 Avant.
