ysabelle
I have ordered 18" Monzas on my MkV GTI so am naturally concerned for their security. I once owned an ST170 and didnt realise that every quick fit/rapid fit/ford garage has a master set comprising of 8 combo's for every single ford alloy. When they nicked the alloys they kindly left me the locking wheel nuts at the side of the road without a single scratch on them!! They were Ford equivalents of McGuards! So, bottom line is the standard VAG locking wheel nut good enough or will I need 3rd party ones? If so, which is the best? Cheers
BenjyGTI
Deinately invest in a set of McGards, the high security versions with the anti-grip collar. Was the first thing I did when I got my GTi to keep my 18's where they should be, on the car Not sure what the part number is for the GTi, think its 28018 SL or something, I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong
JonnyGTi
Got mine from here : linky to McGards Quick service and they are the right ones for Golf V
RedRobin
Def McGards and use the OEM locking nuts as well. Follow the instructions and also invest in a 120Nm settable torque wrench.

RedRobin
I think I got mine from Halfords but had to search for it cos the sales boys aren't too savvy. It's in my car all tucked up for the night so I can't go and see right now. I'll post a pic of it in due course. Wasn't particularly cheap but works very well. JonnyGTi
Yeah, I agree on the torque wrench too ! I got a Draper Micrometer Adjustment Torque Wrench 30-210nM and it works fine and has a nice long arm. The Draper Part No. is 3001A. They are about £22 on the net. TP27
Seen one here at £21.78 but they want £6.50 to deliver ? Anyone found it cheaper? http://www.abbeypowertools.co.uk/store/d...owitem5346.aspx

RedRobin
According to that review you posted, Metalex, the Halfords one is the best but also much more expensive than any of the others. I really don't think I spent as much as £50 on it! Here's a pic: The end bit is removeable and everything is a very tight and reliable fit. It all comes in a durable polythene tube. I really don't think I spent as much as £50 on it! [/ QUOTE ] Cheers Robin. I checked the Halfords website yesterday, and it still costs £50. I was hoping they'd have reduced the price since that review. At less than half the price, I think I'll go for the Draper. If money was no object I'd get the Halfords one, but I'm moving house soon so I've turned into a tight b*****d!
TP27
Remember, you'll also need to buy a 17mm deep socket fastener too (for the VW). Robin, I take it you tighten to 110 Nm ?
RedRobin
Ah yes, now I remember buying the 17mm deep socket (pictured) separately but in Halfrauds. I'm sure I didn't pay £50! I'll usually splash out for something if I think it's good but that price seems a bit heavy. Perhaps they made a mistake. GTI Handbook Booklet 3.2 page 67 states 120 Nm. Is it different for the Mk5 R32 ?
TP27
In the past I've set at 110 Nm, only 'cos it feels so tight at 120 Nm !! I use copper grease on all bolts just in case though and I am a stickler for checking regularly !! Now that I'm corrcted, I'll re-set at 120 Nm (same in R according to handbook).
RedRobin
110 Nm is what most peeps set and I'm including competition drivers. 120 Nm is a bugger to undo for a roadside puncture wheel change! I thought I read somewhere that you should never grease wheel bolts!
TP27
You are completely correct on grease. I am very sparing with it but I got caught on a motorway with a flat years ago in the pissing rain and now I go for the easy release bolt rather than the rusted rigid route !! I check my bolts most times I clean the car and have never had a "relaxed" setting with a bolt yet (even with grease used).
winrya
hi, has anybody got any pics of these locking wheel nuts fitted on the car??? thanks
RedRobin
I can take a pic for you tomorrow if you want. Out of curiosity, why ?
nhs
For the McGards at a distance, both the red and grey GTIs have them - you can see that they're slightly brighter than the black covers on the other bolts http://www.tyresmoke.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/781119/page/1/fpart/2/vc/1 Some people have simply painted the bright parts with matt black paint so you can't tell The side view can be seen here http://www.priracing.co.uk/product.php?xProd=
RedRobin
TSN link doesn't link...."Database" problem. What on earth is the point of going to all the trouble to paint them!? What would Jung say ? nhs - Your "addict" title should be changed to "Doctor Jung" .
