ppage
Hi Guys, Looking to get a price on a first service for the GTI. It's on variable servicing and will be at about 16500 miles when it's due to go in. I looked at a recent post about what people paid for the first service and the price varies from about £100 to £230+ for what is I assume to be just a basic oil service. I phoned around myself a little, and appears that all you need is oil and oil filter, new sump plug and a pollen filter. And the usual £2.39's worth of washer fluid (despite the fact that I always top it up before it goes in - what a con!). Anyway - all that comes to less than £25 + whatever you pay for your oil if you supply your own (or about £60 + VAT if you let it get put on the service bill). So, what else is involved to justify the higher quotes I had? Well I asked around and it seems that some dealers will charge you for 2 hours labour to give the car a complete check over, whereas for the lower quotes I guess they are charging I guess about half hour of labour to just do the necessary. So the question is, what is actually required for a first service on variable servicing and what are the implications for the cars warranty? I can't find anything in my cars literature that clearly explains it - can anyone help? Cheers, Buzz.
Simonl
Someone on here said that Skoda or Seat dealers might be cheaper. A good call if you want to remain within the VAG group.
ppage
Hi LeMan, Interesting you should talk about Skoda, I tried a couple of Skoda garages, one Skoda dealer couldn't give me a price without going away to calculate it and suggested that I really should take it to a VW dealer. The other said no problem £235 + VAT Apparently this was mainly labour charge to go over the whole car checking stuff, or if I just wanted an oil, oil filter and pollen filter change - he quoted £110 + VAT - not quite so bad for what I guess has to be just half an hour of work, but not what I call cheap. So, really I'm not sure that Skoda are that much cheaper and more to the point, i'm still not sure exactly what is really required on the first service because when you phone VW, they are very vague about it. Thing is, I can go over my car myself checking fluid levels and tyre pressures. I reckon the average 'Tyresmoker' has enough interest and knowledge of cars to know if something isn't right or needs replacing. There doesn't appear to be any major problems with my car that I don't already know about, i.e steering rack problem and a de-laminating windscreen + a few rattles - and these are all covered by the warranty - so I don't think I really need to pay for someone to tell me what I already know is wrong, worn out or still fully functioning? Are there any VW tech guys out there who know exactly what needs to be done and/or checked on a first service (with variable service intervals setting) other than oil and filters? Cheers, Buzz. steve_h
Buzz there is quite a long post on another forum about this. If you go into the MkV section at the top ther is a sticky about long life service. I can link to it as it will just take you to the welcome screen.http://www.uk-mkivs.net/forums/ Steve
TwoSheds
The biggest variable is an individual dealers labour rate depending on what part of the country you're at but you need to make sure when you book the first variable service confirm you're going to be charged for 0.9 hours labour for this first service. Ken1
I have 18,000KM's on mine about 11,250 miles and it is coming up on the dash as " service now " Does it need to be done after only this amount of miles? Any advice ?
RedRobin
Your car will 'tell' you when she's ready for a service. Anything from 10-15,000 miles according to what type of journies she has done. I'm now at 11,550 miles after 9 months and still no indication. I recently asked my dealer and he said not to worry.
