nbetts
OK - I know we all love our GTi's - I took mine for a run to the office today (normally work from home) Essex to Sunbury-Upon-Thames... 77 mile each way... Car peformed perfectly - it is bedding in quite nicely... 2000 miles now. Journey took 1hr 10 minutes and average fuel economy was 34.2mpg - Now that is good.... Very very impressed.... Strange the difference a bit of sun makes to your outlook.... Aussie TSN'ers must be this happy all the time.
AndyCh
Yep, the sun is out, the GTi stays at home, and out comes the Elise !
RedRobin
...Gosh! Does this mean that your GTI is your Winter car ? 200 neddies not brilliant on slippy surfaces!
OzGTI
Yes, almost all the time. Melbourne gets a bit dark and wintery for a couple of months a year but nothing like you have to face over there. Our real winter here is about 8 weeks- June and July. Pretty good conditions for driving really for most of the year. Pity the roads are a bit better. [/ QUOTE ] .....Just wait til you have done about 10,000 miles. Mine at 11K suddenly feels as if she's been gently re-mapped!! Perhaps it's a combination of the weather (though I thought turbos preferred it cool) and me having done a CarLimits course. The highest mpg I've ever done was 34.5 but the most boring journey I've ever done. I had to lead a friend for about 50 miles who refused to drive more than 40 and even 60 on dual carriageway with no traffic!! This friend is so 'green' that he refuses to fly in an aeroplane. I have to respect him for 'walking his talk', but. Usually about 28mpg for me - Except the CarLimits course which was about 12mpg!! nhs did about 11mpg that day IIRC. OzGTI
Red, Did you post about Car Limits or did I just miss it? Was looking forward to reading about that. I presume, given the MPG figure that you also scrubbed the tread off your 17's!!
RedRobin
Yep, all scrubbed up and my brain re-mapped! The thread is: Here
AndyCh
Red - you want to try 130bhp in a 750kg car on 225s with the only traction control system being your own right foot, then getting on an slippy surface ...... new underpants please ! The GTi feels very very planted in comparison, thankfully. It's not really a case of summer and winter cars, we got the Golf because of an impending new baby (now 6 days late) and 3 into 2 seats doesn't go. My little Lotus is feeling very neglected at the moment though .....
RedRobin
Exceptional fun those Lotus but strictly hardcore. At my age I prefer more comfort. A friend of mine when we were teenagers had a Lotus 11 on the road and the 'passenger' seat was a tiny folding picnic seat welded to the floor! I haven't seen him for many years but recently heard from another of our 'gang' that he now races an Aston Martin.

RedRobin
IIRC my friend fitted the picnic seat himself just so he could state the car was a two-seater to be able to use on the road. His girlfriends weren't hugely impressed though!!

I have 838Kg and 112bhp
AndyCh
Early Elises weighed in at 725kg, mine is 755kg (steel discs as opposed to metal matrix composite, GRP engine cover v ali, amongst other minor changes). Standard S1 power was 118bhp up to 190bhp, S2 is 120bhp up to 190bhp. Mine is a standard S1, but has a couple of mods to bring it up to about 130bhp. They have gradually got heavier over the years, as they've got softer - it's all relative though !
