RossOliver
Hey, I recently purchase my first car, a 1999 Golf GTi (115bhp). One thing i've noticed since I got it home is that when turning on the ignition, it seems to stick on for an extra half second or so, making a nasty grinding noise (like if you turn the ignition when the car is already running). The key itself isn't sticking, so I imagine it's a timing issue somewhere. Any idea where I should start looking? Thanks for your time, -Ross
mikemod
Sounds like the starter motor is sticking, this is a known problem with the MKIV's This link gives a detailed description of the problem and how to fix it. oxfordlad
My current car has done this for the last 45,000 miles (same engine as yours)and I just put up with it as AFAIK it is not doing any harm. However as you have just purchased it, I understand why you would want to fix it!
gtiveedubber
I would want to fix it because I hate that sound! It sounds so wrong that surely there is some sort of damage
RossOliver
It reminds me of when you put the car into reverse when your rolling forwards or if you give it a few revs before hand - horrible grinding sound! I've also just noticed something else slightly off with the car. It appears the driver side door is slightly bent down, by about 3mm so it doesn't open/close smoothly or flush with the rest of the car. I imagine it's something to do with the weight of the door (since it's the 3 door model). I found an article about this one which says to shim the hinge. Looks like it's going to be a busy weekend -Ross
RedRobin
Welcome to Tyresmoke, Ross . The dropped door thingy was quite common in new cars last Summer but easily corrected at the dealers. Just take it in and politely say "Oi ".
