Sugarj
Hi, I own a late 2003 MKIV R32 which has had it's 6463 update but recently seems to be a little sluggish. I get the impression that it is running a little rich fuel wise. First and second gear seem fine when accelerating fast but third gear appears to be quite sober whatever the revs. If anyone can help or has had the same problem I'd like to hear. Many thanks. Also just one for the tekkies. Magazine stats usually claim 0-60 for the MkIV R32 as being about 6.4 seconds. whereas the MKV is often quoted as 5.8. I'm guessing that the engine in the MKV is identical stat wise as the MKIV ( with the 6463 upgrade to 247BHP ) as well as the Audi 3.2 ( used in the flagship TT and A3 models ). Plus the MKIV is a good 50Kg lighter. Does anyone know the MKIV stats post 6463? 0-60, 0-100 etc? Cheers
helfinger
i would get you MAF looked at as most cases its due to that....
Sugarj
Thanks mate, what is the MAF?
Oatz
Mass Air Flow Meter - Had mine replaced only 2 weeks ago - totally transformed the car (shame I still have a rattly engine though......)
Mook
The MAF sits in between the air filter and the air inlet pipe to the manifold - it measures how much air is being drawn into the engine and the ECU adjusts the fuelling accordingly. It's one of the most common causes of sluggish performance and reduced fuel consumption on every car that VAG make. About £75 + VAT from VW. You can source them a bit cheaper from German Swedish and French or Euro Car Parts, but they will probably have to order one in for you. Your VW dealer should have one in stock. Because your car is probably out of warranty, you may want to get your local VW specialist to replace it for you. Should be about 30 minutes labour charge. Oatz
FYI my mpg's were utter rubbish before having the MAF changed, now it feels like driving with an everlasting tank of petrol!
RossG
What sort of difference are we talking Oatz? I'm lucky to get an average of more than 22mpg most of the time - and that's not driving particularly hard... I wonder. Will look into it if I ever get the thing back
mb
There are some instructions on Rosscom that indicate how to diagnose MAF performance via Vagcom - the less scientific test is to disconnect it and see if teh car runs better - if it does this suggests the MAF is not providing the car with good info & so should be replaced. Oatz
Well I was getting around 22 or less mpg's (average driving etc) and whilst it was having its pre-warranty expiring complete check over I asked them to look at the MAF as I thought the car should be quicker etc etc Now I'm returning about 28! (foot to the floor driving) Get them to check it as it is a warranty job
pigdog
That's odd, mine has always averaged 22mpg and quite a few other owners that have stated their average mpg, are you sure you're not just driving like Miss Daisy now?
Sugarj
Thanks alot folks, I'll give that a shot. My car is still in warranty but I'm concerned that the VW garage will say they can detect no problem in the diagnostics and refuse to replace the MAF. Any hints or tips? Cheers folks! Woppum
When the engine runs rich it usually has much thicker smoke coming out of the tail pipes when cold and drips black oily water. It worth having a look. Rev the car when cold and see how much smoke comes out.

[/ QUOTE ] When the MAF is faulty, it won't always throw an error on the ECU, because the readings from the MAF may still be in tolerance, so the dealer may say that it's fine. I would suggest you ask the garage to replace it under warranty becuase you're sure it is what has gone. If it turns out not to be , then the garage can take the new one back off and diagnose the problem further for you.
