I thought this was better for a new post!

Sadly in a way but still was planned for a while the bike is now on Ebay frown.gif .

Question now is when looking for my smlove2.gif (A8/S8) what should I watch out for?

I noticed a site that gave a 7 page PDF document with things to look out for on A8, but am concerned that I know very little about the inner workings of cars I just know that I love them.

I will probably almost definately get it AA or similar checked for a bit of peace of mind and I will check the inner electrics work but will that cover everything??

I would like to avoid the situation TomK's father was in!!!! I hope you get that sorted TomK!

I have mates that have good car knowledge but most of them are older and know more towards the older model cars and would not be able to cover the 8.

Any comments reccomendations welcome!!!!!

P.S. I will have to wait till the bike is sold and would preferably like to find something before the beginning of August but other than that would rather wait (if I can) and get the right car.

And then soon I will be jump.gifjump.gifECLIPSe.gifjump.gifjump.gif

Look out for shunting of the gearbox,

Fuel leakage at the high pressure hose above the engine,

Clicking noises from the dash, if so expensive to repair.

Any dings in the ally body bring asking price right down.

check all elecy bits work including seat motors, folding wing mirrors and cigi lighter etc.

If brakes squeal then OE pads have not been fitted

look for the lable in the spare wheel well, if not there may have been accident damage.

Try and VAGcom it and do the rest of the checks as you would on any other car 169144-ok.gif

Good Luck

I dunno where your PDF is from, but PaulW's www.audipages.com is obviously a must. There are enough of us TSN'ers spread around the country, so we might be able to go kick a tyre or 4 with/for you(?). Theres nowt worse than traveling an hour or two to find that the minter advertised is actually a minger mad.gif

There are enough BIG GUNS on here that can advise you, perhaps we should put together our own collective checklist. Do we have owt in those sticky pages The Svenmonator left us? blush.gif

Ps, I see Paul's PDF is 7 pages grin.gif

Spent most of the weekend driving my parents 740i BMW as it saved mileage on my Passat and I hate (with a vengance frown.gif ) the Honda Civic! but I wont get started on that!!!

The thing I noticed was that the rubber is starting to go green in places and break up etc.

They bought the car off their neighbours a couple of years ago and it was in very good condition, he drove it at least every day and is heavily into cars running the Croydon District Motor Club etc since then it has deteriated as my parents do not understand the car thing at all!!! smashfreakB.gif

My concern is given that when I hopefully get my hands on an A8 it will be more of a weekend car I do not want it to end up in the same condition, how can I avoid this??

I used AG rubber care but it runs in the rain, tried Megs trim detailer same thing. I have used silicon spray on my door sills and that looks great but still with the running. Is there anything that wont run down the side of your freshly waxed motor? mad.gif

When rubber trim starts to harden and break up its often as a result of UV damage from sunlight. Tyres, for example, will last much longer without cracking and discolouring if a car is garaged. Treatment with silicone-based stuff will make it look better for a few days or until it rains, but not in the long term.

Will you be able to park the car in shade or under cover (garage, carport or even a car cover)?

I will only have my drive that side by side will only just fit both the possible new car and my current one that I use for work.

Only other place is the grass opposite, which is a definate no if I want it to stay in good condition.:(

@Crasher: Do you keep the body parts in the freezer? shocked.gif

Because I have a selection of old and/or broken cars I need to use the garage to keep the better ones in. It's also the only level ground on our property so that's where A8 gearbox transfusions must be conducted. Fortunately it's big enough for an A8 plus ample working space.

Manky fridge/freezer is in the kitchen, where it belongs.

Car body parts, rather than human parts smile.gif

We have a huge american-styled fridge/freezer combo, in the house, but the freezer compartment just isn't big enough. Hence the manky freezer in the garage.

However i also have a flat-bed saw table, 2 router tables, and a large stock of timber in the garage. Thats the main reason why i cannot get the 8 in it smashfreakB.gif

If I had a garage then the 8 would definately be stored in there! the junk is in my daughters bedroom at the moment (she only stays with me at weekends).

Sadly, my budget has has altered in a bad way frown.gif and it looks like I am going to put getting the * on hold for a while frown.gif instead the money I get from the sale of the bike may go into something else that I have wanted for a long time, possibly dare I say it longer than I have wanted an A8 shocked.gif

A 4x4 (will that get me expelled from tyre smoke??)

Anyway I will have to see how the money goes but I will get an A8 at some point!!

Thanks for all the advice etc!!!
