AvantSE
I have an A4 Avant that did not come with the chrome window surrounds, and I would like to add them, except for the horror stories i have heard re: the upper trim strip that cannot be changed without removing the side glass. A couple of questions then: 1) Could someone please post close-up photos of the lower parts that go on the bottom of the side windows, particularly the joints at either end where they meet the piece that goes above the glass? 2) How much would it cost to buy the lower parts (assume there are 3 bits each side) ? And do they just stick to the window rubbers at the bottom? I think I may have come up with a solution to the top bit but need to check a couple of things first before I make a tit of myself
Chav
What colour is your car? Really not worth the hassle that mod IMO. IF anything, changing the mirrors will give more of an impact and that's a five minute job. Am asking your colour, as a black de-chromed avant looks stunning. You could swap your front grills and get a proper gangsta look!
AvantSE
Mine is crystal blue (ugh). It is definitely not worth the hassle if it involves removing the glass BUT... I am looking into another way of achieving the same effect without so much hassle.
AvantSE
Actually, your comment about the mirrors reminds me; do chrome mirror caps look really naff, as they are considerably cheaper than the real thing (though they are bound not to look as nice) ? shark_90
Both my A4's have had black surrounds and IMO I think it looks good. After thinking about S4 mirror caps I decided not to do them as I don't have the alu window surrounds and I thought they might look out of place. Chav
I got some of the matt ones off Hoffmeister who hated them. Yes they look naff compared to the OEM ones, but no-one can really tell unless they know what they're looking for. The chrome ones look much better on avants/saloons as it matches the window trim and the replica chrome finish is better quality than the replica matt IMO. So yep, for £60 the chrome ones are a bargain.
bearra
Agree Chav But I think matt/chrome/brushed all look better than stock body colour casings on any Audi IMO
AvantSE
I was thinking, if I can pull it off, to get the chrome window surrounds fitted (providing the bodge for the top bit works without looking cack) and then chrome mirrors. Would prefer matt ones but as has already been pointed out, there is little on the car that would match (though the roof rails on mine look matt - are they supposed to be, or are they faded chrome ?!). It's an Avant, 2001 model.

[/ QUOTE ] Wasn't saying the ones you have look naff, I keep seeing the self-adhesive jobbies too that stick to the existing mirrors, about half the price of those you have, and it was those I was referring to. The thing that is holding me back from getting some similar to yours is the fear of breaking the heated mirror glass, which I assume is quite pricey to replace. [/ QUOTE ] Don't worry , both me and Hoff agree the matt ones do look crap - in comparison to the OEM ones and the replica chrome ones. However the matt ones are a better match for the cab (with its windscreen surround etc), which is why I've left them on. (Plus I'm not that picky really ) For a saloon/avant, I'd get the replica chrome ones!

Sparky
I think the finishes off the car. I saw two identical A4's except for one had the chrome, the other didn't and both the dealer and I agreed that I needed to spec chrome on the order! The dealer told me it was actually a dealer-fit item in some cases (not sure what he meant), but if you'd still like pictures, let me know. AvantSE
Yes, if you could post some pics it would be a great help. I agree, there is a massive difference in appearance between those with and without the chrome trim. What would it have cost as an option on a new car? Sparky
Cost me £130 as an option. Will take some pics tomorrow, it's pissing it down right now!
UBM
You need the chrome! But I wouldn't try thinking of retro-fitting!
