STA3
Hi All Just pulled into the works car park to be told that none of my brake lights on my 1998 1.8T are working ! Wondered why some guy in a people carrier had been gesticulating at me in my rear view mirror - even though he continued to drive up my backside for six miles ! No bulb warning signal has come up on the dash so don’t think its likely that all three bulbs have gone at the same time, also think the autocheck system highlights if the fuse has gone also. Could it be the brake switch ? If it is anyone know how you get to it and how much am I looking at ? Thanks
Cupramax
Yes, I can virtually guarantee its the brake light switch, its up at the top of the pedal box, dont know how much but its only a switch so can be more than £10 if that.
neo283
the mas right - brake light switch. Small white plastic item positioned right at the top of the brake pedal arm. Tricky to get into as you have to remove a lot of trim. I got mine done at a garage for £30.
STA3
Cheers Guys Just been quoted £13 for the part from Audi, need to find out if its 2 pin or 4 pin (apparently they fit both to 1998 cars and the chassis number is no use for finding out, you have to look) Going to have a go at fitting it myself - let you know how it goes. neo283
I sent it to thhe garage as haynes rated it as a 4 spanners out of 5 difficulty (possiblly due to the trim removal and need for a security torx screwdriver head) - I'm no spanner monkey, so i let them get on with it. From what I saw, they removed the fuse box panel in the dash side cheek, then the fise panel itself (?), and then the trim cover underneath the steering wheel. The switch is located quite high up in the footwell, so it looked like a pain to get at. Careful with replacing the trim - if it's not clipped in right it will rattle like a bitch. have you tried www.vagparts.com for a price on your switch? Email them, they're usually quite cheap... Good luck!
STA3
Thanks for the info. Just had a look at it during my lunch break - you are right, what a bitch to get at, took several torx scerws out and still couldn't get the trim to move. Phoning round garages now to see if someone will do it for me tommorrow.
STA3
Result ! Local garage replaced it for £10 - Had to buy both types of switch though as Audi couldn't tell me which type I needed, they will not offer a refund either as its an electrical part ! fortunately the surplus one is the 4 pin variety and only cost £6. neo283
Nice one! It's comforting knowing that not all VAG repairs cost millions!
