pritesh
Hi all, does anyone have a picture of where this dreaded item is located on a 2001 1.8T 20V Tiptronic Passat? I have suddenly noticed that the performance has droped off while I was on the motorway last night! The car is due for its 50K service but this cant be the only factor so im thinking its the MAF on its way out. A Pciture would be greatly appreciated folks cheers
Rustynuts
Don't know on the Passat, but it'll no doubt be just after the air box / air filter housing, in the air inlet hose. It'll be the only thing in there with wires connected to it.
philperkins
Changed mine recently - 10 minute job. It is located on the left of the engine compartment as you pop the bonnet. It is under a small plastic cover which removes easily enough. Then remove the pipe section containing the MAF and swap it for the new one. Return the old one to VW for cash-back! Pic attached - good luck.....

Rustynuts
Yes, they can fail slowly, to the point where the car is nearly undriveable and still not throw a fault code. And they can fail suddenly and give reduced performance and still be driveable, and give a fault code. Or any combination of the above factors. 9969
Funny enough I have a similar problem with my '99 1.8T ! Thought it was the heat ! What sort of price for MAF unit ? Any ideas/help greatly appreciated Is it possible to "test" the unit by just unplugging it ?
pritesh
Now there is a thought...as it is baking outside the Air is hot consequently reducing Engine powerput...this could explain my drop in performance as it was fine before the heat kicked in. any thoughts? cheers P
Nogbert
Mine is located inside the air filter box. You need to unclip a few hoses & connectors to be able to lift it and turn it upside down for acces. Seen price quoted at £65 + £25 exchange fee + VAT Iain
