sapphire1616
I have noticed an oil drip onto the exhaust, just roughly where the gear lever is positioned. It's a 2002 S8. Any common oil leak problems on this model? I only just noticed it after not using the car for about 10 days. It burns off but am a bit worried incase its transmission fluid as I don't see a way to check the level. Any guidance most appreciated.
spencerbruntlett
If it is transmission fluid then the levels are not your main concern, that stuff is pretty flamable! My 4x4 has an extend breather fitted specifically to route spilled fluid away from the hot bits.
Botang
Its a common fault with all V8 tipronics A6 & A8, have a look at the guide on Audipages I understand that they have recently superceeded the part but this has been a known issue for a long time. Not sure about the fire risk mine has done it for years without any problem. Its a tiny amount of fluid that drips onto the left cat IIRC.
sapphire1616
Thanks very much for the info. Really appreciated. I am paranoid about my S8 so you have been a great help. Guess its a trip to the stealers now. Any idea of how much money I can expect to be taken for?

[/ QUOTE ] It's a very simple job, the seal is £10 it took my mechanic a couple of hours but most of that was freeing siezed bolts on the exhaust, cost me about £60. If you know a mechanic you trust to do the work I wouldn't go to audi with this
Botang
[ QUOTE ] Cor Botang. I have just seen your exhausts. Where do I get them for mine. They are wicked! [/ QUOTE ] Cheers Mine came from a company called EPS in Holland, although a few members have a similar system made by LPS in Ipswich. Have a sear for quad exhaust and youll find all you need to know. Looks like I was wrong on the superceeded part, I was thinking back to an Audiworld post that I had read but unfortunately that was for a clutch seal. They say around $350 for the repair, so I think Charlie had a bit of a result with £60.
fudge
As others have already said, this is a very common problem; usually occurs betweenabout 40k to 90k miles. Almost all cars seem to be affected eventually. I had mine done at the stealers; oil (for top up) and new seal less than £15 but about 2 hours labour so total bill about £250 including vat. [/ QUOTE ] Replacing an oil seal is one of the easiest jobs on a car, this one is better than most because it's easy to get at, you just take the exhaust off and you can get at the driveshaft, mine was the offside one. I really don't see the need to pay £120 an hour for such a simple job unless it's under warranty in which case it will cost you nothing. find someone competent and save £150 on the labour rate
