VW iPod Prep

Well my local VW dealer fitted the VW official iPod prep for me today. Cost £150 fully fitted, and so far I am pretty pleased with it. Got it put into the glove box in the end (rather than advertise by having a cradle etc). Took them about an hour and a half to fit.

For those of you that don't know how it works, you select the CD changer source and then have access to the the first 5 playlists on the iPod (via the CD1-CD5 buttons) as well as all of the songs (CD6 button). You can also select Mix on the stereo and it will play the songs randomly.

Slightly dissapointed that I can not just select a track/album to play from the iPod directly and only play through the playlists of the huge list of all tracks, but I will just have to play around to set up a set of playlists that work for me, and it will be quite nice to have my entire music collection on shuffle!

£150 well spent I think so far.

yup i have the rcd 500. you just press the CD button twice and it switches to the iPod input. Can still use the changer just fine.

DOH! why don't the dealers know what they are talking about... SAUER0421.GIF

I asked my dealer whether it is possible to have both the iPod (dealer fit) and CD changer (factory fit) – he said NO.

I changed my order to have factory fitted iPod with the sat-nav instead of the CD changer...

oh well, at least I will have the MY2007 iPod kit factory fitted in the armrest, I suppose on the rare occasion that I want to play a CD I can always eject the nav disc and play it in the headunit... smile.gif

I have this system in mine and it's very good - originally I had the 6 CD changer but a 60Gb IPOD is much more music. The parts are readily available from your VW dealer and it takes about 5 mins to fit. The only downside was that I could'nt play the odd CD (say a new one I'd just bought) as I had an "A" version of the MFD2 DVD. This was solved recently when I upgraded the firmware on the MFD2 to make it a "B" version that now plays audio CDs in the nav slot.

i've read on other threads that the CD changer (1-5) buttons on the head unit operate the playlists on the iPod.

does it take the top 5 playlists in the order they appear on the iPod screen (ie. alphabetical order)?

so if i was to create playlists called "1 Fast" "2 Calm" "3..." etc they would be operated by the relevant button?

am i right in thinking that "6" puts the iPod into shuffle mode?...

only 6.5 weeks or so to go now so making up some new playlists should help to kill a few more hours!!!

Yes, the play lists play in the order they display on the screen when you hook up the ipod to itunes. So CD 1 = Playlist 1 etc. Each playlist will count up to 99 then start saying number 1 again but will obviously be playing Track 100 on the playlist as the HU only displays 2 digit track numbers. I always have a New Mix playlist that I add new stuff to. 169144-ok.gif

CD 6 is the number that shows when you restart the car - it is the default back to the list that was playing. So if you were listening to Playlist 4, that playlist will start again but will show as 6. No idea why but I think its the same in the VW as Audi ipod.

To put the ipod on shuffle, set it to shuffle mode BEFORE plugging it into the link and bingo, shuffle. You also have Scan facility to scan through the first few seconds of tracks on all Playlists. grin.gif
