AnArtist1
I have now been to 3 seperate Audi stealers asking their opinions about my inherited 'Supercharger' noises after my cat converter transplant. (Noises occur at around 5/6 revs in 1st). All stealers are stumped!!!! It is not the Cat, It is not the airbox, The extremely helpful people at Tonbridge Audi said it could be the 'gear box'!!!! But they have never heard anything like it ever. I completely forgot to mention that the ATF was replaced. Could it be possible that an incorrect ATF change has left spining gear cogs dry, making the noise?
Botang
To be on the safe side you ought to get the ATF level checked as soon as possible.

AnArtist1
No, it doesn't sound like a metalic noise. It's a very high pitched whizzing/whirring noise like a drill speeding up, (or like a super charger.) The drive to work involves a lot of stopping and starting and it made the noise at nearly every junction changing from 1st to 2nd. I am getting the ATF levels checked by another stealer tomorrow. Could it be first gear whirring freely when it changes to second? (just a thought, god knows how these things work!!!)

nikw
My money would still be on an auxiliary or cambelt tensioner bearing making the noise. I'm imagining it being a bit like a dodgy shopping trolley wheel which only misbehaves above a certain speed. I've just had just the same sort of noise (albeit present from idle upwards) on the missus' A6 cured by replacement of the aux belt tensioner. You need to find a decent specialist or proper mechanic who is able to diagnose the problem, otherwise the stealer will insist upon changing the engine and gearbox as a diagnostic procedure. At the road speed that the noise occures, have you tried shifting into neutral to see what happens (or to manual shifts). What happens at that speed in reverse? (no, dont go from that forward speed and select reverse!!! )

AnArtist1
New theory off the latest Stealer: Cat Converter not properly sealed/attached, noise is due to air/gases causing expansion at high revs/pressures. Sound plausible? Now booked it in to the original dealers who casued the problem in the first place. Told them I was outraged that their attitude was 'live with it'. Here we go again
AnArtist1
B*STARDS!!!!! Guess what? On my third visit they re-fitted the CAT properly and surprise surprise no more noise!! Why can't these muppets do the job right in the first place. And as for the 'Live with it' attitude, they can kiss my b-hind!!!!

AnArtist1
Guess what? My Catalytic converter rattle & supercharger noises are begining to happen again!! I really don't want to go back to these dealers again but as they caused the fault in the first place I will have to. Ok it was a nearly a year ago but these things like this should not come loose again, should they? This is so depressing... my car clicks when I brake due to not getting the ABS/ESP sensor fitted yet, and now it rattles and whines on acceleration. This must be because I do not have the Audi S8 Emergency budget in operation this month!!!!!!
