garcon magnifique
Ok let's come back to the real world shall we? MrMe, no idea where you've got your details from about the XK but you're doing the GTI boys a huge favour! The XK is only available with a 4.2 V8, producing 300bhp and 300lb/ft. It comes in at a fairly hefty 1635kg, which gives it around 183 bhp/ton. Not exactly a rocket ship, but once rolling - especially at mway cruising speeds - that weight isn't such a penalty. The Legacy B4 depends hugely on state of tune and condition, but it should still be running at least 260bhp giving it a bhp/ton not too far off that of the XK. Unless it's a 2.0 with a bodykit or running on three cylinders... I would give you the standard GTI's figures out of Evo for comparison, but I couldn't find it listed under "supercars" ... garcon magnifique
[ QUOTE ] the GTI boys [/ QUOTE ] Oh, and girls of course! By the way, all these stories of racing other cars. You do realise that puts you at exactly the same level as the "W*nker" in the thread title, don't you?

Oli
Understand sort of what you are saying Garcon, but I do think its you that need to get in the 'real world' as you put it. Quoting BHP per ton is all very well, but you forget on the Jag it not only has a gearbox, but propshaft and rear diff to'loose' some of its power on!! Also vehicle weight is very applicable, no matter what speed you are doing and especially at higher speeds. Obviously I am not saying the GTI is faster but in a real world, there is very little difference between the two of them.
garcon magnifique
True enough - once you get to somewhere around the 200bhp mark, it actually needs a significant performance increase to really make a visible difference on the road - and then it's often about how the car puts the power down. But you can't blame us for taking the pee just a little bit.
martin275
There are so many factors, it’s impossible to say car x is faster than car y on the public road. How do you know that the other driver was in the right gear, using all the revs available or even using full throttle? It also depends on how soon the other driver gets on the throttle e.g. when exiting roundabouts etc I out dragged a 350Z away from a roundabout yesterday in the Passat, but I don't think he was trying all that hard. For what it’s worth, I don’t think that the Jag is a great deal quicker than the GTI and you don’t notice a few tenths on the road anyway. I know that the new XK8, which is lighter (I think?) than the old one, ‘only’ does 0-60 in 6.0 seconds and 0-100 in 15.0 (iirc). That’s not exactly supercar performance! I appreciate that this is a bit of harmless fun / banter, but it doesn’t portray the GTI driver in a particularly good light (it’s a bit chavved up Saxo / VXR etc). If you’re happy with the car and its performance, does it matter whether someone else’s car is quicker or not?

Jack_is_Back
[ QUOTE ] It's not even the fastest Golf on the road [/ QUOTE ] No, that would be something like this: Quicker than a R32?
garcon magnifique
Well, upto 30 at any rate. (Apparently, the R32 is the fastest car on the road to 30 - Woppum said so. ) It's all harmless banter (and I trust is taken as such ), and I guess with my history in Imprezas I shouldn't preach about boy racer tendencies, but I do implore you to take care and be aware of your surroundings when tempted, and not to get dragged into an all out red mist race. It ain't worth it. That's not to say you can't have a bit of fun with another car - done the right way it often prompts the favourable responses mentioned earlier in the thread. RedRobin
Wow! That red Mk3 in the vid really shifts!! I do wish that video makers wouldn't add silly music soundtracks though - I just want to hear the car! All above is harmless banter I hope. [/ QUOTE ] Nice to know that I'm right sometimes!! I know it’s interesting to find out how another car compares to your own, but you aren’t going to get an accurate comparison against a stranger, who isn’t aware that his/her car is being tested! I remember when my dad got his Boxster (7 years or so ago), he told me that he was being ‘challenged’ boy racers on a regular basis. He resisted the temptation 99% of the time, secure in the knowledge that he could have beaten then if he’d wanted to. I try and take the same approach when I’m out in the BMW, but I do know how hard it is to resist a challenge!
