R32 - External Temperature Sensor Fault

Hey!

I finally decided to sell my reliable (if not very fast!) 2.0 GTI a couple of weeks ago, and treated myself to an immaculate 03 plate R32.

Needless to say, i think its an amazing car!!! grin.gif : 169144-ok.gif

However, on my way into work yesterday, the external temperature sensor was reading -50 degrees!! The temperature in the car then started to rise pretty significantly, despite the standard 22 degree auto option being active.

When i left the office 8 hours later, i had the same problem. Today, the temperature sensor and climate control have both been working perfectly once again!!??!!?? confused.gif

You guys got any suggestions please??

the temp sensor connection is lose.....or not connected. It's located on the near side behind the plastic grill on the bumber. I had this problem when VW took the bumber off to replace the headlight unit and forgot to re-connect the sensor.

....and welcome to Tyresmoke.

As per Tim's post above - this is the likely cause. You'll need a screwdriver to remove the small grill in the lower bumper on the passenger side of the car. It's not held in with screws, but there are three holes at the top the grill and you can see the "hooks" that you'll need to push down.

You can see the temp sensor as soon as you take the grill off.

Sweet - i knew someone on this forum would have an answer!! jump.gif

Really appreciate the advice - i'll give it a go and see if things improve.

Also...(!) i've read a lot about flatspots on the 32 on TSN. I dont know if mine has had the 6463 upgrade - anyway i can find out? Is it something that VAG can do under the extended warranty?? Its due its 20k service in a couple of weeks - i was going to get them to take a look at it then, but i dont want them to sting me with a huge bill!!!!!

They can also plug in the diagnostics system if they don't have access to the central database and it will tell them straightaway - #6463 is the software version on the ECU. This was a free update from VW to overcome a problem that made the car dangerous to drive, so you should not be charged for it.

I have asked my dealer to check if this update was done, even though the paper work when I got the car said it was done they reckon it hasn't been applied and they are now trying to charge me £73 quid to apply the update, saying it was a upgrade not a fix is this right?

It is categorically not an upgrade. The ECU software prior to the 6463 update (note the word "update") was to fix a hesitation problem (note the word "problem" as well).

If they persist, ask them to stop the work and call VW customer services and get it validate first.

If the car has any warranty left then it is definitely covered by that. If not then the £73 is definitely worth it for the change it makes 169144-ok.gif

They reckoned it didn't need to be done as the car doesn't suffer from the hesitation problems that the update fixes, I have paperwork from the previous owner that states the update was applied, so one of the dealers is not being straight with me. I reckon it has already been applied and the current dealer was trying it on, and then when I challenged it they said it didn't need doing.
