pritesh
Hi All, I have just left my car at the VW dealer in Guildford for its 50K service and within 20 mins I recived a call to say that the service was done but I have a split CV boot and my front pads and discs are shot and rear pads need replacing also. I have been quoted a total cost of £430.14 for the brakes 283.63 inc vat for front discs and pads 146.51 inc vat for Rear pads only does this sounds ok? My car is a Passat 51 plate 2002 model 1.8T 20V Sport Tip with 50K on the clock! Cheers P
v23
I had my front discs and pads done at kwikfit the other day for £250. I also had a cv boot replaced recently at the dealers, that cost something like £140 (3 hours labour, and part). I'd get them to do the CV boot, but tell them to whistle on the brakes, they've probably got a fair bit left in them still and they're just telling you that they'll need doing before the next service. Take it to kwikfit and ask them to check them out.
tappers
On the first service of owning my Passat at 40k (2001 X Saloon 1.9TDI 130) I had to replace the pads and disc's all round and I think I paid around £600 as the service was around £750 in total. You want to watch those CV boots as when a garage did mine they screwed up the entire car! but that was not in Guildford.
pontyslapper
I had my rear pads done at National Tyres about a month or so ago for a bargain £55!! They used Unipart pads - seems OK to me. VW Cardiff quoted me £120 if memory serves.
pritesh
Cheers guys... Im confident with this dealer in Guildford doing the CV boot I have used them before and they always do a top job on my car. - I woudl recomend this dealer to anyone in the area. Re: Brakes, I will prob hold off in the brakes as you are likly to be right in that the pads would have atleast 1-2K miles left in them. cheers for the info! v23
This time last year my dealers told me my rear pads needed doing, then yesterday they told me the same thing. Kwikfit have said that there's still plenty left on them.
tappers
I often wonder whether appart from te obvious fact that stealers love to often rip off the customers I do wonder whether some of it is to do with covering their own back so they get them done sooner for safety but I could be wrong! v23
I think it's because the next time they see the car could be 10,000 miles on and as such the part could have completely worn out by then, even if at the time it's got 6,000 or 7,000 miles left on it. pingpongpo
They normally say when I have my MOT done that my tyres are on the limit even though they have about 3mm left on them. Good for another 5K.
tappers
mordecai - I see your point there I had not thought of that side but a good point! Simon130 - I have had that from garages, but I did see something on TV about getting the limit changed from 1.6mm to 3mm because of safety aspects and they tested it in a car without ABS travelling at 50 or 60mph and the car in front braked sharply and the car with low tread rammed the car straight up the back and made a nasty mess and I suppose it did proove the point! pingpongpo
This is why you should always travel at a safe distance
ocrp
Go to an independant for the CV boot. You shouldn't be paying more that £75 for it. I've had both mine go in the past year (and the joints). You really need to keep an eye on them.
Wobby
[ QUOTE ] This is why you should always travel at a safe distance [/ QUOTE ] I travel lots on motorways and see plenty of 4-8 car pile ups. Sadly they are caused by people not having a clue that they need more distance to stop in the wet. They're all "stuck up each others ar$es" and dont have a chance. Poor driving rather than tread depth!! I fell much better having a winge Wheres my keys, lets get back on the motorway

pugboy
I paid £95 for discs and pads for mine a few weeks back. Bendix and mintex if I recall so decent quality. Paid £40 to have them fitted. I watched them do the work and it took just over an hour. If your paying £280 then thats nearly £200 in labour - quite an hourly rate! I paid £120 to have the rear discs and pads replaced at my local VAG specialist. Probably could have shaved the cost of that, but didn't have time to shop around. pugboy
Local motor factors. Probably about the same as buying online from somewhere like GSF, but as there are several different types of pads etc it's easier to buy local incase you need to swap them.
