Sorry to be a bit thick but can someone tell me categorically should the fans spin all the time the engine is running or do they cut in & out (which was I thought the point of an electric fan !) or is this a symptom of the infamous fan problem ?

When your climate control is on they should spin at a low speed constantly - the high speed one will kick in periodically depending on how hot your engine is.

You have a problem if they are not spinning on the low speed setting - but the high speed setting is pulsing on and off every 30 seconds or so.

Having just had this happen a few weeks ago, it's very ovbious when they are pulsing.

Reckon on between £300 - £500 to have the problem fixed - unless you're handy with a soldering iron - there's a neat soloution posted on UK MKIVs if you pop over there and do a search.

Unfortunately this is a common fault on the MK IV platform - fingers crossed for you

Thanks - I think mine probably never worked as they have always pulsed - would never have known it if I hadn't read about it on here though - as vagcom scans fine.

Will try to get it booked in - fortunately I should be covered under warranty still - makes me start to think about buying an extended warranty though !
