crasher
I'm off on a test drive of a 4.2tdi this weekend. Its a 55-plate with 10k on the clock. The stealer is asking £48k for it. I'd appreciate what sort of price i should be haggling for if i go for it. At present i've not considered trading in my S8 - i'm still mopping the tears away from hearing how little it is now worth
Merlot
Retail for that car is about £46k if its a sport and a couple of £k off if an SE. Mind you, for £6-7k more you could get a deep discounted new one. The other option is to do what I did and buy a full laden 55 plate 4.2 PETROL Sport for £38k (a few months back now) as the 4.2 Diesel is expensive 2nd hand. craigyb
You really don't want to hear it.... I know it upset me several times when trying to sell my S8 after 12 months of ownership.
craigyb
Yes, the 4.2 TDi may be cheaper to run, but you will have to do a lot of miles to make up the difference betweek 38K and 48K. Which is why I went with the W12, I couldn't justify the extra cost of the TDi as my mileage was very low.
crasher
I'll have to work out how much fuel i'd use between the tdi and the W12 over the course of a normal years use (for me). Mind you, apart from Lincoln Audi (Chris_B's old car) most of the W12 prices ive seen are way too much
craigyb
Yes, but you would also get 3 years free servicing and maintenance with that W12, not something I would expect to find on a TDi.
Golfer
I've just taken delivery of my new 4.2TDI Sport all extras £51400 on the road. http://www.tyresmoke.net/gallery/album386
Chrisg
Crasher , the W12 prices may be way too much but do they actually sell at anything like the sticker price? craigb's is brill, and it just purred up the road, with a bit of whooosh, after the last Windsor meeting
Chris_B
Apart from my old car, apparently! Somebody please give it a loving home, and plenty of rural A-roads to dominate; it must be missing it's evening runs...
Merlot
As you know Chris I asked them about buying it but they were a bit high on the £. Shame as it looks great!
craigyb
Ok, 2 cheap W12's, Chris's at Lincoln 40K with 40K miles and a grey one at Stockport £39k for 27K miles, within a few months of each other, So should have the service and maint pack. Although the one at Lincoln say 12 months, it should have 3.2 years left to run. I guess you could get them a bit cheaper for a cash offer, these things do not fly out of the showrooms. Well not until you hit the loud pedal anyways...
Merlot
The thing is, those two W12's are not cheap. Phone anyone up to sell a W12, and they will offer you £2-4k more than they would for a 4.2 petrol sport. That's why I bought a nearly new version of the latter for £38k. craigyb
They are cheap compared to all the other W12's on the list. And really the 4.2 doesn't hold a light against the W12. I was going to buy a 4.2 and test drove one for 5 days, I returned with a dissapointed look on my face. But after I test drove a W12 for 3 days, I didn't want to give it back. I know 38K is fairly cheap as a dealer offer me £35k for mine in a trade in.
Merlot
I'm sure that the W12 is a different car to my 4.2 but I am happy with the performance of the latter and don't find it too much less than my S4 which is my standard comparator. I phoned a couple of guys to ask about buying in W12's and concluded that I would only be prepared to pay £35k for a two year old W12 which is about £5k more than the same age 4.2. Unfortunately I couldn't get one at that price!

Is this something the dealer can revoke once they get the car back? I am tempted, trust me. I'm just out of contract and in negotiations for my next job so i'm reigning in my spending until i've secured the next 12 months of finances
craigyb
I don't think the dealer can revoke the warranty, I think they have just ticked the standard boxes for advertising. I would always ask as the description on allapproved is 99% of the time incorrect. Many of the W12's I looked at were showing 3 years and were actually 5 years. Chris_B
Lincoln may have my old W12 up for just shy of £40k, but based on what they gave me for it plus the cost of keeping it on the forecourt, I'd say they should be open to at least consider offers to the tune of a few k. It might not get down to £35k, but it's a well-specced one - the only difference from Craigs is the black alcantara/leather seats and whatever Craig has added to his. I did hear a rumour that Audi UK were taking cars that came back in with the Service & Maintenance plan and putting them back out to the dealer network without the plan, but I'm sure that must just be an unfounded rumour, as they would be entirely unethical... Regardless, if anyone's looking to buy my old W12 and they get offered it sans Service & Maintenance, I'll back them up in kicking up a stink, as I paid my £500 and entered a contract for a plan that was transferable with the vehicle. aliAUDI
I can't speak with respect to other dealers, but its not something I have heard about, and not something which Audi Uk would like to adopt. There will always be the slightly unscrupious dealer out there, but most are 100% genuine
