Picked up my new import GTI today.

Full UK spec as promised complete with leather handbook wallet although not UK script .... yet!

Must say I'm absolutely blown to bits, this car is fantastic! Fact. One very satisfied customer.

Thanks for all your help people with regards to import advice. I'll be sure to buy you a drink, not all at once mind (Yorkshire lad after all).

Car is Steel Grey with relatively basic extras. Who cares? All I need now is some white jeans like chalky white grin.gif

Happy days.

I've owned about 14 cars previously, mainly sporty orientated models of some sort but never have I been so impressed. The styling didn't initialy 'do it' for me when the Golf was launched but I gave it a reluctant closer inspection and kind of fell in love with the car. It's just a good all-round package - does nothing badly and virtually all things very well. 169144-ok.gif The only time I question my purchase is when I see mint A3 2.0T Quattro S line's but then I know they don't handle as well...at least my standard 2.0 A3 Sport didn't. 169144-ok.gif

Snoopy

The experience I had was mixed and I'm sure will be very useful for others, i will pen something next week.

I was having a good look round the car today, when I pulled the rear centre arm rest down via the boot I could not then re-engage the two 'shooting bolts' they seem to be stuck in the down position and will not budge, any ideas?

As promised a short ramble of my experience.

Gene Kelly…. body popping? I’m not usually swayed by advertising, but that GTI advert did catch my attention and reading the VW Golf GTI reviews I knew I would have to have one.

Having sold my Alfa 147 pretty swiftly (smashing car to drive, poor reliability) I was now in a position to start looking properly. The VW dealers would not budge on price and the best deal offered was 3.5% of the list, not worth a squirt! Via Autotrader, I chanced upon Motor Provider based in Sheffield offering some cracking deals on EU imports especially VW Golf GTI’s. At the time of my visit they appeared to have plenty of cars in stock to view and confirmed more in storage elsewhere including the Steel Grey GTI I now own.

Like most car sales people, the sales patter was given confirming that all the cars are sound and adhered to the UK specification schedule. After a couple of days thinking the deal over, I bravely left my deposit without doing much homework on EU imports. I was semi safe in the knowledge that several companies I work with have bought numerous cars and vans from Mortorpoint, Burnley and they were pleased as punch with the different import vehicles they had bought and the service received. However, the next day I found Tyresmoke and began to read the very useful posts on EU imports and decided to ask a few questions to shore-up one or two other matters. After digesting some of the info found, especially concerning Motor Provider, I did go a little pasty and had second thoughts on the matter.

Following the above events, I decided to write formally asking for Motor Provider to confirm the Spec in detail. In reply, I received a five-word email confirming the spec and later a brief fax confirming the same and also offering a full refund if not satisfied with the car on collection. Why do they do this? Surely it is not difficult to answer my request formally after all I was spending a sizable chunk of cash. This reply was not what I had hoped and my fears were made worse when no justification was given for their lack of response.

On balance, the set up at Motor Provider looks the part and the people I spoke and dealt with were friendly, as you would hope to find. Use of the cafeteria was good and the bacon sarnies and strong tea was first class.

I decided to wait the 4 weeks in order to get the new 56 reg. On the day of collection I went armed with a list of points (thanks to Tyresmoke users) and the official VW Golf specification document picked up from my local dealer. All in all the car was, to the best of my knowledge, UK specification and included for the items of most concern which I believe to be the alarm system complete with internal motion sensors, a space saver steel spare wheel, automatic light switching, automatic warning lights, GTI leather handbook wallet, carpet mats and 2 key fobs. I’m just waiting for the English Language handbook now and V5 registration document, which is in the system apparently!

In conclusion to my experience, Motor Provider delivered the goods and I’m thrilled to bits with the GTI and would recommend them for purchasing from stock.

I hope the above commentary is useful to those thinking of making and EU import purchase and thanks for reading.

great post and glad you are enjoying the car. beerchug.gif

suggest as soon as you get your V5, pop over to your local VW service department with your GTi service book and ask them to put you onto the VW UK system. they will fax the items to VW head office.

you should then get your UK VW assistance card through the post shortly thereafter.
