jamesR
Picked up GTI after a 6 month wait. Very Happy. But VW Ipod connector box has been placed on roof of glove box. Two problems exist 1. When Ipod cable is plugged into box, the glove box wont close. 2. The connector blocks the cradle for the GTI manual. (which incidentally is two thick to fit in the glove box below) Small problems in the scheme of life, but will need sorting. Where have other people placed the connector box? (PS no one told me black GTI's need washing every five minutes)

BLOCK
did you get the factory fitted ipod connector or did the dealer fit it afterwards for you?
jamesR
Difficult question. I assumed it was factory fitted as build date was week thirty and ipod was specified prior to this. However when I asked dealer to check with techs she said that it was fitted off site, which I interpreted as not off shore (south africa) where the car was made. BLOCK
did you get the centre armrest? if not you'll have to have it in the glovebox, but if you have then it can be fitted like this..... Paul
jamesR
Have got the centre armrest and the fit out looks good. However the glovebox is still my prefered position as long as its installation did not interfere with the handbook crib etc.
oxfordlad
re-mount it in the small glove box on the drivers side, works great there!
Muppetboy
I had mine fitted a couple of months ago at a VW dealer, said they couldn't fit it to the armrest (which I knew to be bollox) so they fitted it to the glovebox... it's just a little wire that hangs down with the Ipod connector, the Ipod just plugs in and it doesn't interfere with anything. Yours sounds like a different kit to the one the dealers fit after market?
jamesR
Makes sense (sad to say only found out this compartment when my girlfriend pointed it out). Is it an easy job to reinstall?
oxfordlad
Not sure how the glove box opens, but should not be so hard? I installed the lead myself in the small glove box and was really easy to do! - its all open access.

rowley
got the dealer to put it the small glove box down to the right. Fits perfectly, all sizes of IPOD. Plus its not air conditioned either, so less risk of damaging any electronics - remote I know, but you never know. You should get the dealer to move it for you free of charge. prt57
Hi, with the ipod in the armrest is there any difficulty closing the lid? In the photo is looks like the ipod is very close to the top. Sorry about this question but does the car charge it up as well? Is it fairly secure and does not wobble about? My son has an ipod Nano which is thinner than the ipod in the photo. Cheers, prt

The kit comes complete with plastic shims of varying thicknesses to hold the various Ipods in place - I've got a 60gb Video Ipod in mine but I've also tried my IPOD nano in it fine. You can remove and insert the shims if you change IPODs but for short journeys you can just plug the IPOD in as the mounting is fairly firm without the shims. prt57
Thanks for the info scillyisles, please could you let me know what comes up on the display and what is the sound quality like? cheers.
scillyisles
On the display of the IPOD you get a VW logo when the IPOD is connected although obviously you don't notice that unless you raise the armrest and look - not something I can recommend whilst driving. On the Sat Nav when you press the CD button it shows CDs 1-6 (if you have defined at least 5 playlists on the IPOD) pressing the appropriate button starts playing that playlist. Playlist 6 just plays everything on the current selection on the IPOD - I don't really use playlists so I normally set my IPOD to play all songs in say alphabetical order and therefore use playlist 6. I've currently got 1500+ tracks on my 60GB IPOD so this takes at least 6 weeks of commuting to play through. When you are using the IPOD - the sat nav display just shows the CD number (= playlist) plus the track number from 1-99 when track 100 is played it reverts to 1 and so on. Sound quality - I do not download any music from Itunes as I can certainly tell the difference in sound quality of the tracks downloaded from the Itunes store. I merely use Itunes to import the music from CDs - I always import the music in MP3 format (rather than Apple's proprietary format) and I use a setting of 320kbps stereo at 48000hz sampling. On this quality setting, I cannot really tell the difference between the original CD and the MP3 encoded. I originally had a 6 CD changer mounted in the armrest and changed it for the VW armrest mounted IPOD connection and it makes much more sense. The only drawback I used to have was that I could not play CDs but I've recently upgraded the firmware on the Sat Nav so that I can now use the Nav CD slot to play audio CDs.
