TOK
I know this will be difficult but just wondering if anyone can advise: Have had installed a Becker Mexico Pro, Alpine V12 4chnl Amp, Focal tweets and Mids (front door.. inc focal xover) and a pioneer box into a MK4 Golf.... Now I had this setup (without the box)in my last car and it sounded great but in this one the front sounds real poor. I noticed that they didnt connect the box to the sub output on the becker head unit and instead when I move the fader to the front the box and the front focals are on and fader to the rear just has the VW stock rear door panel mids on. On the Amp it looks as though they have 2 chanls for the front left/right and the other 2 chnls bridged to run the box... Now from this limited info (and my lack of ICE knowledge) would connecting like this and not using the Sub output on the headunit cause it to sound bad (absolutly no quality in the front.. bass sounds good)... ??? cheers
Snail
I would expect the sub to be connected to the sub output, but maybe the alpine amp has other abilities they've taken used. When u say there is no quality, what do you mean? no bass? dodgy high notes? When i first installed my front speakers in my A4, i found they sounded because of the way the speakers are attached to the door card, and the insulation behind them.....they lost the lower end of the sound spectrum...... thus they sounded v overpowering at the top end of the sound spectrum......v hard to describe, they just didnt work for me I ended up having to remove the insulation behind the speaker (to let it breathe), and i've soundproofed the door card (so its more rigid, so the speaker moves air, not the door card)..... John32
Hi TOK Where the Focal speakers new? I had K2's fitted last week and the sound is improving by the hour.
TOK
thanks for the tips guys.. the speakers are old (I had them in my last car for about a year)... the sound too at the front is hard describe..the tops from the tweeter sounds very flat, no quality at all, and if you increase the treble from the unit it just sounds really bad.. like too crispy/metal/irratating sounding if that makes any sense?? ...and the front as well as sounding bad sounds overpowering (you cant sepertate the front from the sub and its all on the front fader)... putting it this way I think there was more actual quality sound from the front stock speakers on the original head unit (the tweeters and front mid replaced in the same position as the original speakers were) than the sound I have now (I also spoke to the fitters...sextons.. and they said its because I should buy another amp to run the fronts and bridge the current Alpine to run the Sub if I want real quality sound.. I appreciate that running that kind of power in the front will improve sound but I would have thought what I currently have would still do the job very well?? cheers
Snail
TOK.....a couple of questions.....are you powering the rear speakers off the amp too? cos u say u have a 4 channel amp (same as me) and thus i would recommend using 2 channels for the front speakers, and bridging the other 2 for the sub. It sounds to me like they are running the rear speakers off the other 2 channels, and using the sub tri-mode on the front speakers, or just letting the amp decide the sub feed. Can you see the amp wiring? if so, has it got 2 sets of RCAs going in, or just one? what RCA outputs does the stereo have, it says 2xpreouts.....are they front n rear, or front and sub? TOK
Snail....the rear speakers are connected to the headunit and the front are connected to 2 ch and the sub is using the other 2 ch bridged (there is only one set of RCA leads going into the Amp.. so I think its front n subs) I took it in somewhere today and he suggested running another set of RCA and use the Sub Out from the headunit he also said it sounds like they have tweeked this more for bass rather than clarity (and the same with the focal cross overs.. he said they havent set them up for high end sound more for bassy tops??) Snail
I've read good and bad things about only using the front pre-outs, and ignoring the sub pre-out......definitely sounds like you need to run that second set of RCAs, and check what cross-over settings they've used on your amp. TOK
Thanks for your help Snail.. Took it in to Hide & Fidelity (part of Birds UK) and the guys tweaked up the amp and Focal crossovers.. they said that they were set up for too much bass.. it is now running flat with no loudness as well and it sounds much sweeter than before, they are running an extra RCA on friday and then are going to reset the whole thing.. I have to say those guys are very professional.. will let you know how it sounds after.. but cheers for your help...K
