twopipes
HI Guys, Last week I took my GTI in for it’s first service @ 14000 miles, The final report highlighted my extremely illegal tyres on the front of the car. Up until now I thought my tyres had been wearing well with about 5mm on the outer edge and across the middle of all four tyres. On closer inspection with the front wheels on full lock I saw what the VW mechanics called extremely illegal. The inside of the tyre was rounded down to the core and in some places you could see the thread under the rubber. Any ideas on why this happened & has any body else experienced anything similar. I replaced the tyres with the same again Dunlop’s. After they were fitted I asked the fitter what could be the problem. Get the camber checked was his final answer after going through all the reason why it wouldn’t the tracking or the balancing. Cheers
Dave
I would say that the tracking is out.. get it checked
Snoopy
too much negative Camber or toe out with the tracking would be two of the main causes.
twopipes
Would you take it back under warranty? back to VW Plmouth, not a place I trust as far as I could throw them. They like to take the " every things fine, could not find a thing gov" approach
Dave
Difficult one mate to be honest. You could take it to your dealer, who should check it free of charge. The other, more difficult option, is to take it to a lazer tracking place, and if it is out, try and charge it back to the dealer. The problem is that you will probably have a hard time getting something off the dealer, because they will just claim you hit a kerb or something. I would get it done at a specilist garage just for piece of mind.
JonnyGTi
Seems you are not alone ! There's an advert on e-bay at this very moment for some used GTi wheels and tyres and it says (quote) : "front tyres need replacing as have worn on the inside due to incorrect camber setting"
twopipes
Cheers guys I take it back in to VW I will keep you posted. They should see that the wheels are in good condition ( not Kerbed) and both front tyres are bold on the inside. Thanks again
Tunner
14,000 miles on a set of orginal tyres is excellent. My Continentals will have to go long before this, mine are also showing wear on the inside of the tyre tread. I put this down to the handling of the car, it sticks to the road, in particular seeping bends like a limpet. These lateral forces on the tyres are bound to cause increasd wear? redragon
I just had my tyres changed. same problem as yours, worn on the inside. On close inspection, I found out that my two front stabiliser links needed replacement. So I changed the pair and tyres. Better have yours checked.
