A6 Climate control unit

I want to replace a single DIN climate control unit on my A6 - 4BO 820 043 AE (type 2 air con).

There's a unit from a later model 4BO 820 043 AD. Does anyone know if this is compatible with mine?

I think there are some differences but not sure if it would work.

Strange that the later car's item has what I'd consider to be a older part number?

What are the spec's from of the two cars? Does one have Aircon vs. Climate etc.?

This is what I've found out so far.

Over a couple of years 2000-2002 Audi moved from a type 1 climate system to a type 2. Not sure what the differences are but a type 1 control unit should not be used with a type 2 system. They then further modified the type 2 system - this is what I want to find out really. I think they added CAN comms but not sure. The later version (AD) is a further modified unit whereas mine (AE) is the original type 2.

sorry for the delay in replying. Anyway, I forgot to mention that I want to replace the single din unit with a double din unit (not that this makes any difference). As for pics I'll take one and post it. What are you looking for (the rear view I guess)?
