jameslon
Had my 5 month old GTI broken into this evening. Passengers side window smashed and some items taken (including IPOD docked in armrest). Glass everywhere. Police patched it up and will inform insurers tomorrow. I imagine Autoglass will fix the window - can they replace like for like, i.e. the same as the factory fitted VW window? Thanks.
RedRobin
Fecking bastard scumbags!! So sorry you hear this!
Jack_is_Back
Don't worry, the window will match exactly mate. You will be finding tiny bits of glass for ages though. Hard way to learn a lesson.
jameslon
Thanks. In future though, what do you guys do, take out the IPOD every time? I was surprised they found it to be honest, they must have been GTI savvy.

Tarmac_Terrorist
Sorry to hear of this. Moving all items out of the car can be such a pain. Even if you had, you would still had a smashed window I guess. Make sure the window is a blue tint - I understand that the very latest GTI windows have a green tint like the rest of the Golf range. nutkins
Had exactly the same thing happen to me not long ago. Although they very kindly smashed the drivers window instead. Meaning I couldn't even drive it anywhere without clearing glass from the seat (without anything to clear it with). And it rained really bad that day They didn't take anything but the armrest was up so I guess they were looking for an Ipod also, I have the changer which of course is pretty much worthless and not worth the hassle to them! One word of warning when you go to Autoglass or they come to you. When the fitter put things back together on mine, he put a long screw in the wrong place, and made a pimple in the door. So politely ask them to take extra care!
Tarmac_Terrorist
Perhaps it would be good practice to leave he armrest open then if that's what they're wanting to look in?

MarcWatts
Bastards!! I know how you guy's feel. I havn't picked up my GTI yet (26th September), but I have had 3 car's broken into, and they were all Saxo's. My red one had the lock done, my silver one had the lock done and they very kindly locked it back up with the same screwdriver (piss-takers!) and my dark blue one had the passenger window smashed, my near new head unit ripped from the dash with my not even one day old new CD in it! It's the first time I had ever, ever left my facia on the head unit. But what they did was take out the unit, and rather than unclip all the wires, they decided to hack through them with a pair of blunt scissors....sigh. This fecked up my central locking, my airbag, and speedo dial lights. Like Jack is Back said, "A hard way to learn a lesson." When I do get the GTI, I'm half tempted to have the windows done proffesionally by this company I saw on "Used Car Roadshow" where they put a transparrant layer of plastic over the glass, and no matter how hard you hit it, all it does it slightly crack the glass rather than it just shatter. stevie_d
It's very sad that on the first page we have a thread about a break in and a thread about a keyed car Can't say anything more than I hope you get it sorted soon mate Oh and Dragonfis; do you mean Pentagon? I think TSN still have a discount with them! I saw a live demo and it was very impressive imo.
Muppetboy
[ QUOTE ] In future though, what do you guys do, take out the IPOD every time? [/ QUOTE ] Dealer could only fit mine into the glovebox which I keep locked when I leave my Ipod in the car... I guess that's turned out for the best that they couldn't fit it in the armrest. I'm tempted to start leaving the armrest up though! Sorry to hear about your break in, they're just scum.
MK5001
sorry to hear that .. but make sure u get the blue color type window for u GTI
Tunner
You left your iPod in view, next time leave the door unlocked, at least they will not damage your car helping themselves! I really would like to sympathise, but leaving valuable possessions in view of potential thieves is just asking for trouble in this day and age. A good post, hopefully reminding us all to be a lot more careful in what we leave on view inside our cars?
ACA_Chap
Sorry to hear this. Hope it gets fixed ok. You might find your insurance covers personal items - worth a check.
TP27
[ QUOTE ] I imagine Autoglass will fix the window - can they replace like for like, i.e. the same as the factory fitted VW window? [/ QUOTE ] If Autoglass replace the pane, it'll not be VW glass. You can take the car to a VW dealership to have the work done, they'll use genuine VW glass but you'll have to pay the bill and reclaim the costs back from the Insurance. If you go through Autoglass, all the costs are sorted for you direct. In my last R, I had Pentagon tints and when Autoglass replaced the marked window pane, Pentagon re-did the tinting but the effect of the new glass/tint finish was completely different to the rest of the car !! I ended up getting my dealer to replave the glass again, this time using VW glass and the tints, when redone again, matched !! Hope this helps. jameslon
Thanks for the support so far guys. RAC Windscreens (through insurers) will process the replacement and I will check about authentic VW replacement. Just for the record, no items were directly on display - the glove compartment was secured and the armrest was down. I think it was just opportunitistic - break the window and see what there is, if anything. The glass has caused some damage to the interior, especially the inside of the door - rips to the plastic, and the chrome above the glove compartment has been damaged too. I guess these are covered somehow by insurance?
TP27
I'm no Insurance expert but I suspect the glass will be automatically covered, however, can you also claim for the smaller cosmetic damages without affecting your NCD ??
nutkins
I had mine done at autoglass and it is the proper VW glass with the logo etc. They had to order it due to the tint

No matter how many times you it, the guy could not break the glass. He used one of those glass smashing hammers (like the ones found on trains and buses) and went at it, then started using his fists

Snoopy
We have had all our cars done with http://pentagonglasstech.com/ saftey glass. in the past well worth it for peace of mind.
fresco1
Yep, have Supaglass on mine and its worth it. Have had it on all our cars for several years - aside from the anti-smash properties don't forget it also prevents shards of glass getting into your seats and prevents glass flying around if you have a bad smash. Wouldn't be without it now! I guess the way it works is - say 2 GTI's parked up, crim smashes one with Supaglass and nothing happens, so crim moves onto the next one pronto ... just a deterent really, keep the 's out! Tarmac_Terrorist
Trouble is you're dealing with scum. If your window wont break they'll probably resort to keying the car front to back in spite.
