stevie_d
Right, this won't be for a while, but I like to plan ahead Early next year I'm looking at getting a track day car, max budget of £2-3k. I'm currently thinking of a 205 GTI with something like an mi16 conversion, roll cage and stripped out. Does anyone else have any sensible suggestions? Bearing in mind that I want something fun, not necassarily amazingly quick and I'd want to drive it on the road. I'd also like something that has two seats and some luggage area for going to the 'ring etc.
Thorburn
Mk1 MX-5? £2-3k you could easily get a mechnically sound example with plenty left over to strip and cage it Rear wheel drive fun too

I know speed isn't my main issue, but are they pretty quick?
Thorburn
1.6 has about 100bhp, maybe a bit more depending on the model. Imports are slightly more powerful and you can advance the timings for a safe power increase. 1.8 is 130bhp. On the road I never find it wanting and the modest grip levels keep things involving (185/60/14" tyres on mine)

fatcat
[ QUOTE ] Clio Williams! [/ QUOTE ] Not for 2-3k Wopps. I think for that sort of money you will be struggling for reliability. A great way to learn track drving though - good luck Will you be driving the car to the track or sticking it on the back of a trailer ?
v15ben
Another vote for either a 205 1.9 GTi stripped, caged and possibly Mi16'ed here. The other alternative is an E30 BMW with a 6 cylinder engine. A friend recently purchased an F reg 320i E30 for the massive sum of £300 and uses that as a track day car. He hasn't done much to it yet except removing some of the sound deadening and other weighty items, but he still has a good laugh in it and can of course drive to work every morning with no worries! You could easily strip it right down leaving only the 2 front seats and make it much more interesting on track
P_G
306 GTi-6 Nissan 200SX MK I & II Golfs stripped out seem to be a common choice

Its currently SORN, but we're going to get it taxed and tested next month so we can drive it to UK trackdays and the Ring. stevie_d
Cheers for your replies guys! Some good ideas, as I'm a track noob I'd like a fun car rather than a track monster, so your suggestions fit right in Robin> I didn't realise they were such good value tbh mate, I'll PM you later, cheers
