Avant special edition tdi or fsiT??

Hi ABout to order a A4 Quattro B7 avant s-line special edition (after years of craving a decent Audi i can finally afford one!) I am having a bit of a dilema about the petrol / diesel debate.

Having owned both a remapped golf mk5 GTTDI and a Golf mk5 1.8T the TDI was just as quick but got 600 miles to a tank (1.8T got 280) I'm looking to go for the Diesel but the petrolhead in me say "#@ck it, go for the petrol!"

Any advice?

Noone can answer that question for you. I imagine your decision will be a function of how far you drive, and what sort of roads you drive on.

For me it is always diesel, but I love driving all over the place and the Avant used to be excellent for carrying surf boards, bikes, tents etc. I had the 130 TDI by the way.

He's got a point Adamski74.

Which petrol and diesel engines were you looking at. at what sort of driving will you be doing (just weekends, commute, long motorway trips)?

If you give us a bit of a better idea we'll try and give better advice. Or you could just say bollocks to both and get a n/a 4.2 V8 (not that I'm biased or anything)! FIREdevil.gifgrin.gif

Thanks guys

I'm going for the s-line special edition so the only 2 engines are 2.0tdi 170bhp or 2.0T fsi 220bhp

I actually have a short stop start journey to work everyday but travel a lot at weekends 100 mile trip to go mountain biking in peebles and 120miles to visit parents. I have kids hence the leather is a must as is the avant.

The reason for the dilema goes back to my experience with the golf. I loved my petrol 1.8T and thought the poor economy (which was significantly less than the manu stated)worth the performance but after i got rid of it and had the 130bhp TDI i felt in real life terms it was just as fast and twice as economical.

The diesel is over £1000 more expensive to buy but will be £60 per month cheaper in company car tax.

Really just wanted to know if anyone had driven both engines and could comment on comparisons?

Personally, I'd go for the petrol. I came from a B6 Tdi to the B7 petrol special edition. During the week most of my journeys are short and stop/start. To be honest, I found the diesel tiresome to drive like that after a while. Take it on a decent run mind and it was superb. It would happily cruise along at 70 with very little noise while racking up 55 mpg (it was the 1.9 130PS not the 2.0 170PS).

The 220PS petrol is deceptive compared to my Tdi. It is much quicker but not particularly noticeable compared to the Tdi because of the manner of diesel power delivery.

At the end of the day, it's all down to personal choice. Had I been racking up 20k miles a year on the motorways then I would have stuck with the diesel. However my 8k a year pootling around the doors is so much more enjoyable in the petrol.

I've got the 220PS saloon at the moment but get the 220PS avant very soon. I'm not expecting any noticeable difference in performance however the ecomomy will suffer a bit. The saloon (which is quattro) has covered 5k miles and has averaged just under 27 mpg which is calculated, not wildly optimistic DIS figures 169144-ok.gif

This is a lot better than I hoped for (especially after a thirsty start to its life) but there again, my Mum drives faster than me crazy.gif

you'll get a lot of personal opinion in these replies as both cars are very good.

I have the 220 PS petrol special edition and the engine is superb. I regularly get 36mpg plus on my run up and down the M4 and I can recommend the engine fully (with quattro of course!).

Personally, I dont like diesel and its just a think that I have with the vibration... it goes through me and I feel it all the time through the pedals and steering wheel. Also, I hate the oily pumps and patches on the floors when lazy people fill up their cars and spill it everywhere!..

I rekon the 170 ps diesel would be good though if you dont mind the noise and slight vibration though...

Watch out for the suspension though.. its a killer, far too harsh in my opinion!...

We mainly do short start-stop journeys, with the odd weekend away and only accumulate 8000 odd miles a year. With these figures many would argue a petrol would have been better - they may have a point. But I still can't escape the fact I've averaged 40mpg since I've had the car (nearly a year, from new) and on a good motorway run have approached 60mpg.

My last car was a 1.6 petrol and I averaged 27mpg.

With the above in mind, I'm more than happy with the diesel.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I am swaying towards the Diesel but am going to test drive both next week before placing my order. I will be keeping the car for a minimum of 3 years so need to be sure the petrol version and extra running costs would be worth it. Both engines produce roughly the same torque but i reckon the petrol would be much more fun to drive.

Is the "interior light pack" worth the money? I can't believe its an extra to have lights above the mirrors!

Adamski, can you get the A4 S-Line Spec Ed in a 2.0TDi 170ps saloon as well?

On the audi configurator it only lists the 2.0T 220ps Spec Ed but no diesel Spec Ed. I have a colleague who is looking at the 2.0TDi S-line A4 and I'm saying there is a Spec Ed but maybe I'm wrong? confused.gif

http://www.audi.co.uk/audi/uk/en2/about_audi_ag/news/Audi_A4_Range_Update_Bulletin.html

this link to the news section of audi has the details of it as published on the 17th of july. Some dealers i spoke to tried to tell me it was only petrol until i pointed them to their own website!!??

The special rdition is a bit more expensive but places like drivethedeal.com and broadspeed.com are already publishing really good discounts. The extras on the special are really woth the extra! (I sure hope so!!!)

Will keep you guys posted on delivery and post some pics.
