is CAN interface needed to Enable Cruise on B7

Although the B7 is not equipped with a CAN gateway like the A3/A6/A8 and Q7, it does have CAN connections to its diagnostic port connected directly to the cluster. So it looks like you would need a CAN enabled lead for some of the functionality like the Ross Tech website says.

The instrument cluster is not connected with the diagnostic tool via CAN in a B7. The 1.8T in the very early B7's can be diagnosed via K-Line too - so cruise control enabling would not require a CAN capable interface.

Mine is an April 2005 1.8T Quattro so it looks like i can buy the cheaper lead then. What sort of things would require CAN interface?

Strange as this is what Elsawin says that from 2005...

A2 - Positive connection (15), in dash panel wiring harness

A32 - Positive connection (30), in dash panel wiring harness

A57 - Positive connection 3 (30), in dash panel wiring harness

A70 - Connection (15a, fuse 231), in dash panel wiring harness

A76 - Connection (diagnosis wire K), in dash panel wiring harness

A121 - Connection (high bus), in dash panel wiring harness

A122 - Connection (low bus), in dash panel wiring harness

A159 - Connection (L), in dash panel wiring harness

As far as I remember the very early B7's like yours havent't had any modules that talked via CAN, so the chances are high that a non-CAN interface will suffice. Nevertheless you should head for a real Ross-Tech interface since 3rd party ones won't work with any version newer than 409 and there have been a couple of things that you will find very useful when using current versions of the software.

If you check the wiring diagram more closely, you'll notice that the A4 (B6/B7) has 3 different CAN databuses: CAN-Powertrain, CAN-Comfort and CAN-Infotainment. Unlike other current models, the A4 doesn't have a "real" CAN-Gateway, so the diagnostic tool uses mostly K-line except for some control modules that are connected to the CAN-Powertrain. The instrument cluster is connected to the CAN-Powertrain too, but it doesn't talk via CAN to the diagnostic tool.

Here's a short excerpt from a VAG-COM control module finder listing. You'll see that there are 3 protocols used KWP-1281, KWP-2000 and CAN (actually KWP-2000 via CAN).
