FunkyJon
Hello all, I'm planning on taking the missus away for a bit of a weekend break towards the end of the month and I was thinking of going here: http://www.paramount-hotels.co.uk/hotels/northern-england/paramount-palace-hotel/ Has anyone ever been here or to another paramount hotel? Any good?
Soapsuds
the hotel is pretty good, if you are into chain hotels Its big, impersonal, but does the job!!! Rooms are basic, but clean. Its set in a good location right opposite the gardens and opera house with loads of free parking and easy strolling to the pubs and restaurants in the centre of Buxton...... I have stayed in an other Paramount Hotel once when i was younger and it was very much the same - clean, big and impersonal. I'm sure you will enjoy your stay if you go there..... Failing that, if you want something nicer, more personal and traditional, take a look at my Aunties Hotel. Go for the largest double room (Pavilion) for views across the gardens and a nice romantic feel..... Grosvenor House, Buxton.
FunkyJon
Thanks chap, To be honest I quite like the big and impersonal aspect sometimes, as long as they're helpful if I need it i like that they just generally stay out of your way Still your auntie's hotel looks quite nice, something to think on anyway

You wont go wrong there mate, it's just fine!!
martin275
We stayed there for a couple of nights back in March. The first two rooms they gave us were dreadful, but it was a case of third time lucky! Some of the rooms have been re-furbished more recently than others, so if you're not happy keep pushing until you get a decent one. Apart from that it's OK. I wouldn't give it a big thumbs up, but if you're paying the right price then it's fine. The location is spot on though, a couple of minutes walk into the centre of town and the food wasn't bad. Mollox
Do NOT do it! This place cost me £120 at the last TSN Buxton meet and it was AWFUL!! Prehistoric (and cheap) decor, a total lack of amenities, total fawlty towers feel, GCSE-spec staff and just roundly disappointing. No wait, I liked the gardens. A bit. For £60 a night it'd be ok, at £120 they need shooting. Anywhere but the Palace One last thing - there's nothing romantic about it either.
NewNiceMrMe
As soon as I saw the words 'Paramount Hotels' I was determined to come to this thread and write 'DO NOT DO IT!'. However, Molly has beaten me to it. This is because I stayed in a Paramount Hotel 3 years ago in Brighton. The Old Ship Hotel, right on the sea front. It was an absolute disgrace. The rooms were appalling. The doors had holes in them, the decor was filthy, nothing worked properly and the windows were absolutely pitted with muck - so bad it could have been bright sunlight outside and I'd not have known. The room had really old wicker furniture in it too. It smelled. Bad. This was in a hotel described as 'prestigious'. It was anything but. Never, ever, ever, again. Mollox
The thing is, you won't find much else in Buxton I don't think. I might be wrong but I'd sooner rent a nice cottage nearby after that experience... Whaever you do, under no circumstances go to the Indian opposite the palace! Daz
We've stayed at the The Old Hall Hotel in Buxtonn and it isn't too bad.
CarMad
I'd stay in Wlmslow or Macclesfield. Both very close to Buxton but have plenty more to see and do in the evening.

Avoid at ALL COSTS!!!! The Palace has had some refurbishment, so i think most of the rooms are ok now. You are right about staff etc - typical chain hotel IMO. Especially in a small town. Old Hall Hotel is nice, but opposite my Aunites which is cheaper and nicer IMO!!!
