Hey all,

Bit of advice needed. Time comes in every mans life when he has to face getting the family car !!!! shocked.gif

So in an effort to help my wife fit in with all the other new mothers in our area I have decided on an X5. Budget around £3ok so looking at 2004 onwards but just wondering if it is worth pushing the budget for a 4.8is ? Or is it a waste?

Compared with what? What were you looking at?

The 3 litre petrol is slow and only gets around 1-2mpg more than the 4.8is, the 4.6i is getting better but still not that quick and from reports has a slightly worse mpg than the 4.8is.

So I would say get the 3.0d and get it remapped, you will get a fairly quick 4x4 and 25mpg, or get the 4.8i, very quick for a 4x4 and it sounds amazing, just whether you can live with 15mpg??

You should find that you can get a 4.8 for a lot less than a 3.0d, so if you don't do silly mileage it may be the wise choice, also as cars get older the bigger ones seem to get more desirable so the 4.8 may loose more to start with but as it gets to 5 or 6 years old it may start to balance out.

A friend has gone from a 2002 3.0d and got 26mpg, then a 2004 3.0i but felt it very lacking and only got 19mpg so swapped it for a 2005 4.8iS, really loved it and got 18mpg so pretty much the same as the 3.0i petrol. Although he just swapped it over for a 2006 730d sport, and he is loving the 34mpg and the fact it is only costing him £499 a month on one of BMWs subsidised contract hire plans!:)

Was just comparing getting the 4.4 v the 4.8 on a cost basis. Just wondered if the 4.8 was a huge step up from the 4.4. The fuel consumption isn't really an issue, mileage will be limited and to be fair if you are plugging for the petrol versions over the diesel you really shouldn't be expecting a car that is going to get you more than 20mpg max.

I have driven a 4.4 sport and liked it but I love the look of the 4.8. Just wondered if the extra cost got you a car that was that much better.

In that case I would definitely go with the 4.8iS, there is only a second in it I think on paper, but when you drive them both they are worlds apart, the 4.8 is a seriously rapid motor.

Depends on the cost difference I guess, there are some late 54 plates around for £35-36k, if you could get one of them for £33-34k then it gets more tempting, but then I suppose there are some nice fully loaded 54 plate 4.4's for £28k, you may be able to be into one of those for £26k, is the 4.8 £8k better? I am not sure?

Why not go to your local dealer and take them both out?
