CactusGreen
So, are the B5 tip boxes a 'fill-for-life'?? I have asked dealer before if there should be any oil changes...told nope...reading the multitronic thread with it's 40k change made me think about it again.... Chris_B
Audi will say Tiptronic boxes are 'lifetime fill'. Many Audi owners thikn that an oil change every 30,00 or 40,000 miles will help prolong it's life. I can't say I'd disagree - it's a mechanical device where the oil is heated and cooled repeatedly, and ground between metal components in between. The allroad will only do between 3000 and 5000 miles a year, but I'll still consider changing the gearbox oil at three or four years old.
CactusGreen
Kind of what I was thinking.....what would poor/low oil show as - always had a jurky pull from 1st to 2nd or slow down shifts and often get caught out by it at roundabouts when in drive - if in tip mode no issue so alway assumed it was a 'slack' auto ecu. Chris_B
[ QUOTE ] if in tip mode no issue so alway assumed it was a 'slack' auto ecu. [/ QUOTE ] Oil problems often lead to thumping on shifts, or sometimes excessive whine. Look at PaulW's Audipages site for info - it's based on the A8, but Tip is Tip and they'll all exhibit the same symptoms when the oil needs to be changed. You could also search in the A8 forum, as there's a lot of experience with Tip issues in there. If it's mechanical, it should behave the same way in auto and tip, so your problems could be sloppy TCU programming. What kind of mileage do you have? CactusGreen
Last of the B5's March 2001 - just turned 59,000. Had the odd ocasion where it 'clunked' a shift... Wow some info there...and I'm thinking that as it's going to have to go in for the '4 beep' battery/alarm/siren thing I might insist on a change of fluid if it's not too costly
Chris_B
I have heard that some dealers will do it if pushed, despite the official line being "lifetime fill". An indy might be a bit cheaper though, as I've heard the most common dealer method is to drain the oil, refill, run the car, repeat. Because some oil gets left in the system, doing it twice should flush most of the oil out of the torque converter etc, but it does waste a lot of oil to do it this way. A good indy should be able to use an extraction tool to draw the oil out and do the job in a single oil change. You could ask in the A8 forum and see if anyone that's had their A8 done has any specific advice and perhaps an indy recommendation.
Tobes49
Remeber most tip boxes have a filter element inside. Get that changed at the same time.
