Terrier
The engine temp on my motor seems to be going a bit nuts. When cruising it will drop sometimes to 80 degrees, but mostly about 85. It will then return back to 90 on a bit of hard acceleration. Normally you'd straight away think it was the coolant sensor but that's been replaced, next you'd think it was the water pump but that's also been replaced. It's running an engine check light saying something like "left bench/bank running to lean". This is being attributed to either the MAF sensor or the Lambda sensor as all the injectors etc are running without fault, I can't see how these two could effect the engine temp?? I'm getting a little sick of this motor with all the problems it's had, I had less problems on my 11 year old Astra! It's going back in again today but I would like to see if anybody else has had similar faults before the garage replace another part that isn't needed. Andy496
Tasty Did you get this one sorted out? It's kicked off on my mine and my wife's cars and I've got exactly the same symptons as you've described above. Cheers ATJD
chiller
This could be the problem.......and the remedy for you Temp Sensor
Paul
If you have changed the temp sensor for an OEM Audi one, (NOT a pattern part by a third party) and also the water pump, then it could be one of the following... A dodgy thermostat. Dash pod playing up. (more common in the TT) 1st is certainly worth looking into, second is unlikely, but not unheard of. If you got running lean errors then you need to sort that too. Most likely to the maf. I would certainly replace a maf before tackling a lamda probe. Wak
I have recently had temps dropping, as soon as it gets below 80 degrees the needle will drop, this is typically a sticky thermostat, and I changed mine today. I dont know why this symptom was diagnosed as a water pump, expensive thing to try, pump failures lead to overheating not temperature drops.... it sounds like thermostat symptoms to me.. TDiAvant
I had a similar problem on my old A4, it turned out to be the Dashboard gauge.
Terrier
I reckon my problem comes from the dashboard gauge, the stealers ran the car while monitoring the actual engine temp, it held steady while the dial bounced up and down. They said it was a dodgy clock. Maybe they're wrong and it is the thermostat, I don't know. The lean problem turned out to be a combo of issues involving the MAF sensor, secondary air pump and a gaping hole in the oil breather pipe. All sorted now though and the motor is running great again (but for how long.....?)

[/ QUOTE ] If its been checked like that then they are probably correct.... usually a temp probe in the expansion tank will help confirm if the dash and temp sensor are in sync. Andy496
Thanks for the responses folks. What's my best and least expensive route forward then? Down to the dealers and get plugged in to find out the issue? Or attempt a self fix? ATJD
