Ive just read that the great Aussie racing driver has been killed in a rally accident.

"Peter Brock, a nine time Bathurst 1000 winner and three-time Australian Touring Car Champion, has passed away after crashing his Daytona Coupe into a tree during a stage of the Targa West Tarmac Rally today.

The incident occurred near Gidgegannup at 11.50 local (WST) time, north-east of Perth, with Brock's co-driver Mick Hone being taken to hospital with serious injuries, although in a stable condition. Having retired from fulltime touring car racing in 1997, Brock took to rally driving, becoming a frequent competitor in Targa rallies, including the recent Targa Tasmania.

Police originally did not confirm the passing of the legend, but motorsport officials later informed the media of the death."

Well, 61 isn't spring chicken territory...

The car was the one he's done the Targa Tasmania in, and apparently his co-driver escaped with only minor injuries. One eyewitness claims he over-cooked the corner, but nothing official has been stated as the W.A. police are investigating the cause of the crash.

On the news tonight, the footage from the helicopter showed the car bent around the a-pillar/drivers door - the chassis had maybe a 15-20 degree bend in it - so he must have hit hard.

Probably Australia's best loved and most enduring motorsport hero - he'll be missed. "King of the Mountain". notworthy.gif

The latest "update" from the SMH site, quoting the co-driver:

Peter did nothing wrong: navigator

Peter Brock did nothing wrong going into the "fateful corner" where he died, his navigator and close friend Mick Hone said today.

The legendary race car driver was killed yesterday while competing in the Targa West tarmac rally in Western Australia.

Hone, who suffered two broken ribs and a fractured pelvis in the crash, said Brock was turning around a double left hand corner when the crash occurred.

"As we entered the second corner the car seemed to start sliding and Pete tried to correct it but we just slid off the road and basically collected the biggest gum tree there," Hone said from his hospital bed at Royal Perth Hospital.

"When we left the road, we knew what was going on, we could see it coming," he said.

"I hoped that we would just maybe slip past it but it just didn't happen that way and the impact was so severe."

Hone said there was an "almighty bang" and the windscreen shattered and showered glass over them.

Stuck in the wreck, Hone held his friend's hand and tried to talk to him but got no response.

"I think when we hit the tree, virtually it was pretty instant for Peter," said Hone, who has been friends with Brock for about 25 years.

He said Brock did nothing wrong going into the "fateful corner".

"I certainly didn't feel like Peter made a mistake," he said.

"The car just got out of shape and he couldn't correct it in time.

"He tried to catch it but the car just kept turning around."

Hone said it was the worst and "most graphic" accident he had ever been in.

He said it had always been a buzz being in the car with the legendary sportsman.

"I really enjoyed him driving the car and being able to experience that, and I always felt very safe, but it does show us I suppose that accidents do happen."

Hone said he and Brock had been very conscious of the risks involved.

"You see those gum trees fly by pretty quick and you definitely know if something went wrong it would be pretty severe," he said.

Hone said Brock was a "constant source of inspiration" to him and everyone he met.

"He was not just a mate, he was a great Australian and a motor sport legend."

Hone said Brock still had a great energy and his life with partner Julie Bamford was "flourishing".

Hone said Julie visited him in the emergency ward last night and he had comforted her as best he could.

"She has got to be strong, we can't change what has happened, we have just got to do our best and move on," he said.

He said it was probably the way Brock would have preferred to die.
