ABUS
Just thought I'd share a gem of information I just got from my friendly tyre bloke. Seems there is a price hyke coming in the next couple of months, maybe up 25% on some brands. They claim its due to oil prices (that old gem) and carbon black which has risen 200% this year !! Chris_B
[ QUOTE ] carbon black which has risen 200% this year !! [/ QUOTE ] Hmmm, is this 'carbon black' stuff actually carbon? As far as I understand it, there is a bit of a shortage of carbon fibre at the moment. Apparently US S8s are being delayed if they have carbon fiber trim, which I believe is an option over there. If tyres use carbon to keep the compound looking black, this could add to prices, or even cause limited availability issues. Expect for Pirelli, they can't be using carbon black, as in my experience Pirelli tyres go fecking brown within a few months.
ABUS
Yeah, apparently carbon black is just for the colour. Was told Pirelli are the worst offenders, 11% price rise already this year !!
Chris_B
Pffft! I don't believe for one second that Pirelli put anything in their tyres to keep them black; all the Pirellis I've ever had (all factory-fit) have had brown sidewalls after a few months use. Bloody price-gouging sods; they'll be claiming that the cost of air to fill the tyres with has gone up next...
