Ranter
Hi folks, is there any difference between dealer fitted and factory fitted rear parking sensors? thanks
aliAUDI
yes. dealer fitted isn't as good. not as accurate, and the factory fit ones sit further into the bumper-rather than sticking out a few mill as the dealer ones do
Ranter
Thanks for that Ali, What about interior? is there any visible indication when reversing with either option?
petsy
with the factory option you only get an audible warning when you get close to something.
BlackDiamond
I wouldn't advise you to get the dealer fit ones as they look hideous. They stick out about 2 or 3mm and you have to pay extra to get them colour coded. I don't even like the look of the factory ones as they are too visible but the dealer fitted ones are worse still. Ranter
Yeah. Due to the mess up over ordering, the dealer is offering me free rear parking sensors with my gti. However, I think he mentioned "dealer fitted" rear sensors, I assume that it's cheaper for a dealer to fit them, rather than factory? Is it the same parts they fit, but just that the factory fitted ones are a neater job? Also - are the little sensors mounted on the paint coloured part of the back, or are they mounted on the matt black bit of the plastic valence. thanks
petsy
do a search on this forum for a pic of dealer fit rear sensors on RedRobin's GTi.
edo
Mine has dealer fit and they are a bit sporadic. They are in the plastic unpainted part of the bumper. They look perfectly ok. There is a little speaker "pod" on the left hand side of the boot on the fixed section next to the parcel shelf. I dont trust them, and they seem to pick up small rises in ground - i.e. the ridge at the end of my drive. I may get them checked, but I doubt they can be improved. No doubt the dealer will blame the (other) fitting dealer...
BlackDiamond
They are fitted on the painted part of the back bumper. I'm not certain but i think the aftermarket sensors are slightly different to the factory fit ones, they certainly stick out more.
Oli
Some dealer fit options are ok, but the factory fitted ones are neater, and actually sit flush with the bumper

edo
Mine are lower down (possibly why they dont work so well) on the (normally) unpainted part.

Therefore I assume that colour coding shouldn't be a problem! I'll maybe have a word with the dealer though, and try and encourage them to give me the factory fitted option. (can't really complain too much as I'm getting them for free.)
jameslon
Just a thought. What happens if you have factory fitted parkign sensors, and your bumper gets damaged, i.e. needs replacing? I'm presuming that the dealer can order the bumper complete with sensors direct from VW, with a relevant part number? I wouldn't be happy to have it replaced with the after-market version. Therefore, can't we obtain the part number and ask a dealer to order it direct from VW for fitting?
edo
I think it is all the wiring for beeper and so on - so whilst I am sure you could order the right bumper, you would have to dissasemble half the car to insall it "as factory"..
