lottiefox
[ QUOTE ] Who's the new Mrs?? Must have missed this [/ QUOTE ] I was thinking the same!! Maldives for a week.....darned long flight for 7 days!! Good test of any relationship! Google links through to lots of Maldives places - vast variation in price/quality - probably recommend an all inclusive type thing with plenty of things to do on site. Dave
We went on our honeymoon, 12 years ago.. was absolutly fantastic.. warm, beautiful coral reefs with the most unbelivably multi-colured fish you have ever seen. Down-sides.. food isn't great (mainly fish) but you have to remember that they have to import most things. Alcohol is expensive as it is just bought in for the holiday makers. Male is ok, but not loads to do. Up Sides.. fantastic location, warm seas, great water sports.. snorkling, diving, banana boats, sailing, wind-surfing, also loads of sun-bathing, reading, drinking and eating.. it is probably the most relaxing holiday i've ever had. There isn't much to do.. no telly etc, so you are cut off, and all you can do is relax! A thumbs up from me.
jari
Hi, Okay. here goes. You will love it. We go back out late October for the third year on the go. We have stayed at Taj Exotica (South Male Atoll = 20min speed boat ride from Male airport), Kuredu Sangu (Lhaviyani Atoll = 40min sea plane ride) and this year we are off to the Hilton Rangali (Alifu Atoll - ~30 min Sea plane job). Yep, you get to your hotel from the airport by speed boat or sea Taxi. I asked my fellow Maldivian colleague whom I work with in London (why he chooses to work here in this place I don't know) and he recommends the following having been there: Kuda Huraa, Huvafenfushi, Bandos and Full Moon, Hilton Rangali. If you decide on a place let me know and I will ask him what he thinks as he goes back regularly and visits many islands on his jollies. Again, it all depends on budget. Food varies but you will love it. see also www.tripadvisor.com to find out reviews on the resorts you are thinking about. Its an excellent travel site that was pointed out by a kind fellow here on Tyresmoke, that has reviews and pictures. Hope this helps Jari. sidicks
As an alternative to the Hilton - similar location, but more smaller, more intimate island - try www.mirihi.com - we had a great time here last year. Very good diving nearby (Manata point etc) Sidicks
TP27
Taken the plunge and booked the Honeymoon. Flying via Dubai to Maldives for 9 nights at the Hilton Maldives Resort and Spa and then we're off to Negombo in Sri Lanka. Wading through the number of injections we'll need (including Malaria - yuk)!! Any recommendation on taking money. Will we need local cash ? Cannot wait but any recommendations from those of you that have been to these parts welcomed !!

Ben
Injections? Nasty business. Didn't bother with any when we went to Mauritius and safari in SA, no one advised we should either.
TP27
Well, I'm all for avoiding Malaria treatment as the last time I was in Kenya the pills made me feel rank !! Thanks Hopsta, thought some US$'s might be sensible. Tend to take some with me on most trips. International currency of the world, especially in an difficulty !! Cannot wait for the holiday BUT only 6 weeks to the "big day". !!
JamesB
We stayed at the Ari Beach (now White Sands) resort about 7 years ago and loved it. We went for about a week (9 days including travel) and didn't find it too much of a struggle as the Maldives are all about relaxing IMO and therefore jetlag becomes less of an issue. Where we stayed was reasonably basic in terms of accommodation compared to some of the resorts but since you spend all your time in, on or by the water, the rooms didn't seem to matter quite so much. I did loads of windsurfing, jetskiing, snorkeling and, almost essential in the Maldives, diving. As for vaccinations, well, the chances are that you won't contract typhoid, hepatitis A or yellow fever but they can be pretty unpleasant if you do and it's just a few little injections. TP27
Hep A amd Typhoid are the ones I need. Seem to be up to date on the rest. I've not dived for years (since we lived in Saudi) but I fully intend to do alot of snorkeling. I'd even intended in buying a new mask and snorkel for the trip - must find a decent website to refer to. Anyway, I love the sea as does MrsTP so it'll be brilliant. Our hotel "room" is on the waters edge too !!
JamesB
Sounds fabulous. I can't say I'm not a little jealous As regards malaria, I'm fairly sure the Maldives isn't an at risk area. Also, pretty much every resort has a dive school so you can do anything from basic accompanied dives to a full PADI course. I'd really recommend it as it is some of the best diving I've done. TP27
Sri Lanka needs malaria and we're there for five days !! The Surgery Nurse is advising us well. On the diving front, I've just been looking at buying kit for the trip. I did BSAC 1 and 2 ages ago but I'd really like to do some diving whilst I'm there. Having lived in Jeddah, the Red Sea spoilt us as teenagers for our first diving experiences. Shallow wreck dives off the coast of Scotland came later and never to be repeated !!! JamesB
Wow, someone else who did BSAC! I did BSAC 1 and 2 about 20 years ago on Anglesey. Visibility of about 2 metres and temperature of about 2 degrees . It certainly made any future diving seem luxurious.
TP27
For me BSAC 1 was in the Summer holidays of 1983 and BSAC 2 was in 1984, when I was a teenager!! Now, that makes me......!!!!

jari
Hi, We just got back yesterday from the Hilton Maldives, you will love it. With regards to injection for Maldives/Sri Lanka I suggest visiting the clinic who will let you know exactly what you need. We visited Sri Lanka a few years ago and I am sure we needed a few jabs for that place but Maldives you may be ok. You may also need malaria tablets for SriLanka if you are going in the jungle/mountains but you may be ok if staying by the beach. Best check anyway! Ok back to the Hilton. You have to book the underwater restaurant called Ithaa. I recommend booking this approx 3 weeks before you go as it only seats about 12 people (just email in advance [email protected] and they will confirm your reservation, they are very switched on). In a nutshell, there are 24 different dishes that you enjoy as you watch stingrays, turtles and barracudas swim around you. The Spa's (there are two one on each island) are simply superb, best we have been to (in and out of the Maldives) so far, absolute first class. There is plenty to do with regards diving, water skiing, jet skiing, night fishing, deep sea fishing, excursions to do. To see many many dolphins, then take the sunset cruise or the dolphin tour, stunning. From the sounds of it you are flying the best route too. We've flown three times to the Maldives pretty much every route i.e with Qatar (via Doha), Emirates (via Dubai) and SriLankan (direct out and via Columbo on way back). Emirates in my opinion have it sorted and Dubai airport is great. Anyway, I am trying hard not to spoil it for you and say to much, but if you like, PM me with your email if you have any questions at all. I can also send you a few pictures if you like too and give you a good idea of how much things costs if it helps. At the Hilton you can pay via US Dollars or put everything on your room and settle by plastic later, we did the later for convenience. In Sri Lanka you need US Dollars too for tips etc but again at the big hotels you can charge everything to your room.
