adwhitworth
Castrol Edge 5W-30 I believe Mobil 1 also do an equivalent product. Might be worth giving Oilman a shout as he might have something a bit cheaper that offers better performance.
prel200
Went to the stealers today to purchase an oil filter and enquire about the oil. (Could not believe how rude the parts assistant was..!!) Anyway I am told that my car was serviced with long life oil and only requires changing when prompted by the computer/service light in the car as it is variable servicing. I still insisted that i wanted to change the oil particularly due to the remap and he then said well it will cost £70 a gallon..!! what kind of oil was he trying to sell me.??!! Anyway i walked out without purchasing as he was just too rude..!!! Can anybody advise exactly what oil to use and how much it will really cost me?? Sponge
I'm sure the more knowledgeable here will be able to tell you off the top of their head, but in the meantime - Do you not have the vehicle owner's manual? It will say what specification oil you need in there. Then it's a case of finding somewhere that sells it, e.g. Halfords.
JimLoskot
I have been advised not to use the longlife oil, just use a standard oil and change it every 5k. Obviously do this yourself and not at the stealers. Longlife oil is used to lengthen the service intervals and it is full of addatives that keep the soot in suspension which you don't want really. I'll post up when my expert tells me which oil to use
Sponge
He needs to use an oil that is the same spec as the one listed in his manual, for his car. He can then buy whatever brand he wants, as long as it meets the spec. So unless he wants to use a non-spec oil it doesn't matter what everyone else uses. He needs to get his manual out, or wait for someone from this forum that knows what spec he needs, e.g. they have the same engine/car, or are just plain knowledgeable. While you were at the dealer, you could have asked him what spec oil you needed.
PetrolDave
Just checked my manual - it says to use oil to VW 502 00 or 504 00 for standard servicing, and to VW 504 00 only for AVS.
Sponge
In case it helps further - I found the most convenient and cheapest place to buy my oil was from Halfords. Ebay has lots of sellers and the price of the oil is often cheaper. However, most if not all charge lots for P&P which pushed the price over what Halfords charge. Coda
The Castrol Edge 5W-30 lubricant is the one specifically designed for the Audi and VW engines, when you spend as much as we do on our cars, a few bucks extra for a good oil is well worth it, IMHO.
